Milne family
« on: Monday 16 June 14 23:27 BST (UK) »
Hello

John Milne married Joanna Robertson in 1857 Perthshire.
By 1881 the family were living in Fife, he was a ships carpenter.
I am interested to know what happened to the children.

Alexander Milne born 1862 Fife
John 1864 (Presume these two boys may of died in infancy)

Unknown son 1867
Joanna Waddell Milne 1871
Mary Ann Lyall Milne and her twin sister Jane Robertson Milne 1874.

In 1901 John has his two granddaughters staying with him Jan and Janet McCaullam.

Their children, all born Newburgh, Fife, were as follows:

Elizabeth b.1858 (with family 1861 and 1871)
James b.1860 (7 mos on 1861 census) - died 1862
Alexander b.1862 - died 1863
John b.1864 (still living at home in 1891 aged 26) - cannot locate him in 1901
Unnamed child born and died 1867
Joanna Waddell b.1871 - died 1875
Mary Ann Lyall b.1874 - married Edward McCallum 1893 Tradeston, Glasgow
Jane Robertson b.1874 - died 1883.

So, of 8 children, only 3 appear to have survived as adults.   1) Elizabeth b.1858 (1859 on census) who no longer appears with family after 1871 - probably married but Elizabeth Milne a common name to try and pursue a marriage when spouse not known. 2) John b.1864 (still with family in 1891) - probably married but, once again, difficult to pursue with common name like John Milne.  3) Mary Ann Lyall b.1874 - married as Mary Lyle Milne to Edward McCallum 1893.   Not allowed to post details of 1911 census but you'll find the family living in Ayr, Ayrshire.

Thank you very much.

As these people will be the only connection to my great great grandmother (John Milne was her only brother) I wonder if there are any living relations left in Scotland?

While I have you doing such a great job finding them, can you tell me if there is any death dates for John and Joanna?

I also was told a cousin of the family died in the Great Tay Bridge Railway accident. I found a list of names and came across a Elizabeth Milne (Dress maker) But what really stuck out was Alexander and Edward Robertson ages 21 and 23, I would say these men are Joanna's brothers.

Cheers

As  John and Joanna were still living in the 1901 census it should be fairly easy to find deaths for them John was aged 70 ,Joanna 63 .....As Annette said check the 1911 census first
In the 1861 census Joanna sister was with the family Jean Robertson ...Mary Ann Lyall Milne was also a dressmaker ?  .......Son John was house painter
