Adam Knox m. Ann Gilmore
« on: Wednesday 09 April 14 16:18 BST (UK) »
This couple are, possibly, the parents of my g-grandfather.  What little I know about them is from the records of First Garvagh Presbyterian Church.  They were married in that church in 1846.  Adam was from Killyvalley and Ann from Mayoghill.  My g-grandfather was Hugh Knox.  A Hugh Knox, b. 11-Mar-1848, son of  "A. Knox and Anne" was baptised at First Garvagh Church in 1848.  I would like to know anything more that can be found about this Adam Knox, his wife Anne, and their son Hugh.  I would also like to know if there are still Knox's living in Garvagh.  Thanks.

Hi, found some bits and pieces you would be interested in.

father:John Knox
father occ:farmer
bride:Anne Gilmore
age:full age
status:spinster
townland:Mayoghill
father:John Gilmore

witnesses:Alexander Gilmore/William Knox

also found marriage for Adam's sister: 13 April 1848 Isabella Knox married Peter Henry in 1st Garvagh Presbyterian church. Her brother Adam was a witness.

In the church Visitation lists of 1818 I found the following:
family # 332 Killyvalley

In the August 1825 Visitation lists in Killyvalley:

In the 1840 Visitation lists taken 23 December 1840:

Visitation lists for 16 February 1796:Inshaleen

Mary Gilmore
Mary Ann Gilmore
Robert Gilmore
John Gilmore

Jennet Gilmore
* I put both these Gilmore families as they are the only two I could find in the area during the 1796 lists who had a son John(who would be Adam's future father). Also there is an Isabella Gilmore living with family # 210 the Logans.

Baptisms of some of John and Frances Knox' children:

Hugh Knox 12 Feb 1807
John Knox 31 Jan 1810
Mary Ann Knox 14 Feb 1812
William Knox 1 April 1823
Robert Knox 30 August 1827

*I believe Adam was born in 1811.The only problem is with all these records is they are very patchy and in some instances whole years are missing. The 1811 records do not begin until April and only cover a few months. In the case of Brice and Isabella the records between Nov 1816-May 1822 are totally missing. There may be other children during that time period.

Baptisms for the children of John and Nancy Gilmore:

Robert Gilmore April 1816
Anne Gilmore 13 December 1824
Isabella Gilmore 15 Nov 1826
Barbara Gilmore 23 Oct 1828
Rebecca Gilmore 21 Nov 1830
John Gilmore 12 May 1834
Alexander Gilmore 21 Feb 1836l

Lastly,I found this:

Marker # 288 Garvagh Presbyterian graveyard:

In loving memory of Hugh Knox who died 13 Feb 1897 age 90.His wife Mary Jane who died 23 July 1918 age 88.His brother Thomas who died 17 Jan 1892 age 78.Mary Jane eldest daughter of above Hugh and Mary Knox,Clarehill, who died 7 May 1935.His daughter Maggie who died 16 Jan 1944 and his son Thomas who died 4 March 1946.Could this be Adam's brother??

Hope this helps,Kim

I would also like to know if there are still Knox's living in Garvagh.  Thanks.

Go to http://www.192.com/people/ and type in Knox then Garvagh for result. Obviously, the result may in no way link to the original Knox family/families in the area though.
Am now led to believe that, as was always the possibility, the Knox currently listed in the area is not originally from Garvagh and has no links with their namesake.

Where did your Hugh settle and what records from there do you have that suggest this couple were possibly his parents and/or what other research do you have that suggests this?

Are you the same person as researcher 'Robert Knox' of the posts at:
http://genforum.genealogy.com/ireland/messages/92429.html ?

When Bryce Knox, a younger son of Adam and Ann, met with a tragic death as a result of an unfortunate accident in 1889, his mum was noted as living in Moyletra Toy townland, and Bryce had lived with her. Looks like another of their sons, William, and his family lived in the townland by 1901: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Londonderry/Grove/Moyletra_Toy/1521622/
