Hi Evelyn,

Can you tell me please what their occupations were, as I said in the last post they may have gone to Industry, or there are two other possible jobs then, Shale Mining in West Lothian or even working on the Canals.

Below is the list from Dalkeith to the City of Edinburgh, I doubt very much if they are any good to you but fingers crossed, it may help other people looking for the family.

Cheers.

Hi Archie,
Can see now why I have such a problem sorting them out.!! So many Cassidy`s.
The whole family from Ireland were cited in the Griffiths valuation 1857 as being tenant farmers.
They problably went to and from Ireland to Scotland as well as seasonal workers.
Post 1850 they are cited on the census for 1851, 1861,1871 as agricultural workers in places such as Orminston and Humbie.
Then in 1881 some of my direct family a John & Elizabeth (i.e Philip & Bridget Cassidy) are on the 1881 census for Westfield cottages  Haddington and also  James Cassidy is in the local press and in trouble with the law for poaching. Thanks for the information.
Evelyn.

Hi Archie,
Bridgets maiden name was Bartley also in Ireland it was known as McPartlan.
Johns wife Elizabeth is not known to me and I could not find a marriage record on Scotlandspeople web site.
Thanks Evelyn.J

Hi Evelyn,

are there no ages on the returns ?, if they are both mentioned in the 1851 Census then I would say they were born and married in Ireland, it should state where they come from ie Ireland or wherever, perhaps it's just me but I find Philip an unusual christian name for a male especially at that time.

As they are mentioned in the 1851 Census that would be just about right for them coming over from Ireland to work, I think the Potato Famine  was 1842-44, so I think they arrived about 1845-46 and this would be their very first Census in Scotland, this is why ages are important, it might give us a clue.

Another thought is, did they return to Ireland ?, perhaps when thing got a bit better over there.

Let me know what you think.

Cheers.

Archie.

Hi Archie,
Yes I have their ages. John & Elizabeth Cassidy on the 1881 census are 23 & 22 yrs of age.
Philip & Bridget are 71 & 53 respectively ( 18years age gap maybe its his second marriage.)
I know quite alot about the family in Ireland and have most of the children`s birth registrations, but not Philip`s marriage or either his or Bridget`s death. If they did go back to Ireland there is no record of either.
That's why I hoped to find them in Scotland.
Philip`s brother John and his wife and family are the only ones on the 1851 census, Philip must have followed around the early 1860`s.
Many thanks for your interest.
Evelyn. J
