Worfield - St Peters Church - Burial - 1948
« on: Friday 09 May 14 13:29 BST (UK) »
Dear Forum,

I am seeking information to assist me in locating a burial location for my Grandfather, Herbert Huntley Harrison who was buried at St Peters Church, Worfield in March 1948. I believe that my uncle once attended the church and was not able to be assisted in locating the burial location, however perhaps these details may be available now. Regards Jason Harrison, Australia
HARRISON - Kidderminster/Leicester/Loughborough, BASKERVILLE - Bromyard, COOPER - Wareham, BARTLETT - Swindon Wiltshire, Swanage
COOPER - Corfe Castle, Swanage, Wareham, Steeple

Hello there

I've just googled the church and found a contact us page on this url.

http://www.achurchnearyou.com/worfield-st-peter/

They say that burial records over 30 years old have been sent to Shrewsbury Record Office but you can also ask for the list of names at the church.

Hi Jason,

I believe we exchanged messages in 2010 about this burial. I sent you the copy of the newspaper article you have posted.
Herbert Humphrey HARRISON, age 44, was buried on 9 March 1949 (not 1948 as you state)
I have a photograph of the burial book entry.
I believe that by that time, the Churchyard was closed to most burials. The list of Monumental Inscriptions in the Churchyard do not include H HARRISON.
A cemetery had opened on the outskirts of Worfield at Hallon. I now have a plan of the burial plots, one of which states "Harrison - Hilton"
Unfortunately although I've photographed all the headstones in the cemetery, there isn't one for H HARRISON.
Give me a few days and I'll go and photograph the plot for you.

Gwynne

Hi Jason,
Instead of driving, a 5 hour round trip stroll to Hallon near Worfield, took me to the grave plot of your Grandfather Herbert HARRISON of Hilton.
I 'borrowed' a single red flower to indicate the precise location in row 7.
You can verify the location yourself by reference to the attached plan.
In row 8, Ernest Willey WARD's memorial is in the foreground.
In row 7, Alfred JONES is the small memorial to the left of the flower.
Row 6, beyond the red flower, contains William PIPER and the black stone memorial to George HUMPHRIES.

Dear Gywnne, I cannot thank you enough. You have provided me with information that I can now share with my father and uncle. My uncle lives in Swanage and sometime ago, perhaps more than 30 years ago, he went to Worfield Church and could not locate the burial site, I a not sure what lengths he went to to explore where it might be but he was not able to pay his respects. My father lives with me in Australia. I really appreciate you taking and sending the photo. I never got to know my Grand Father and this information and photo means alot to me. My next mission is to visit his site in person. Regards Jason
