Did Thomas Searle Marry Twice?
« on: Thursday 21 August 14 18:11 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

My 5x gt uncle Thomas Searle (1798-1860) married Amey Brooker in 1822 at St Mary The Virgin Church in Horne Surrey. They went on to have 8 possibly 9 children between 1823 & 1838/41 when Thomas is described as a farmer or yeoman of Horne.

There is on Freereg a baptism of a Thomas Frances Searle to a Thomas & Mary Searle on 8th July 1820 at St Mary The Virgin Church in Horne, Surrey. This Thomas is also described as a farmer of Horne, Surrey.

Is this the same Thomas or is it two different ones?

I cannot find a marriage for a Thomas Searle to a Mary at all.

Hope someone can help me sort this one out.

Many thanks in advance.

Kind regards

David

Id be looking for a burial of Mary in Horne 1820-1822.

Seems like they settled in Horne after the marriage. But traditionally weddings are in the brides parish, so may well have been elsewhere, even if they then lived in Horne where Thomas worked.

Hi Lizdb,

Many thanks for your reply, much appreciated.

I haven't found a marriage anywhere at present & am also struggling somewhat with finding a burial as well. I shall keep at it though! ;D

Kind regards

The West Surrey FHS transcription of the baptism of Thomas Frances Searle on 8 July 1820 in Horne has him as the son of Thomas Searle and Amy, farmer.

The original entry for the above in the parish register of Horne has been inserted at the end of 1840 with no explanation. It confirms the WSFHS transcription and is viewable on Ancestry.

Hi,

Just to finish this one up, at least I think it is anyway! ;D

I don't think Thomas married twice, why not?

Having spent today getting & examining the relevant parish records, marriage licences & censuses etc, making use of Ancestry's free access to UK records weekend, I have determined the following:

The 1841 Census for Thomas & Amy Searle (HO107/1077/5/3/1) shows a son Thomas Francis Searle aged 1 & the 1851 Census (HO107/1600/19/31) shows him as age 10.

I think that the baptism is actually in 1840, just the down stroke missing from the horizontal part of the number 4, if that makes any sense! (I can't think of a better way to describe my meaning at present, so my apologies for that! ;D)

Also the marriage licence for Thomas & Amy's marriage in 1822 states them as being bachelor & spinster.

My thanks to you all, your help has been very much appreciated.

Kind regards

David

Hi Ray,

Many thanks for that, much appreciated.

I'm not quite sure what's going on as I have just checked the original register of baptisms for St Mary The Virgin Church in Horne, Surrey, again making use of an Ancestry free access to UK records weekend. ;D The result of my checking is that there is no baptism in the register for that date (8th July) in either 1820 or 1841 for Thomas Francis Searle! Where Freereg & familysearch have got that info from I don't know!

My thanks again.

Kind regards
