Hi, king william, here are a couple more resources that I found which may assist in future generations.
I found the first by googling Mortimer Maurice an entry in a Cornish newspaper as follows: 1887
MAURICE – CLACK – At St. Philip's Church, Sydenham, June 13, Gerald Joseph Foster, third son of the late Rev. Mortimer Maurice (formerly vicar of Crantock), to Ada Clements, daughter of Charles Henry Clack, of Sydenham.
The second resource is the national archives if you enter the name in the top right search box several references to documents and a medal card appear for the name.

King William
I read your topic with interest and noticed the death that Kathb sent.So I thought i might find it in the a paper or 2, I didn't :( Mainly because there are a lot of years missing. However i did find about 50 references to the name Maurice Mortimer had a quick read through most :).In various places,Cornwall,Wales Wrexham (lots) Surrey +London
Most of them are connected with wales.I only found a couple of ,Previously of Chester.I found some Marriages and deaths
on the way

Married 22nd November 1855 at Clifton. The Rev; Mortimer Maurice M.A Curate of Trinity Church Hotwells.
To Lavinia second daughter of the late Thomas Riley Esq of Abby house in bermondsey surrey.

Also, if you have a connection with the Wrexham  family I found a marriage in Brussels of an Emily eldest daughter of Mortimer Maurice of wrexham.

If any of these are connected to you family I can copy (by snap) and email them to you, not all 50 ;D.You can then add any new information to your topic.Let me know then i can send bit by bit as it will take some time.

Many thanks for this kathb, will have a look at it, being in NZ, you have no idea just how lovely it is to be able to go on a site like and ask a question and receive an answer just like that and by such helpful people.
I remember him trying to do his own line by writing to some people in Suffolk and waiting months for an answer. if a reply came at all.
This Maurice line is the line of my children on their father's side.
My father was a schoolteacher and a historian who gave university lectures on local history, he was passionate about history.
He would not have believed this wonderful email system as he died in 1988.

Hi, King William, you are most welcome. I agree with you that this site is wonderful.  I have been helped so much in the past by rootschatters and still ask for assistance.  For this reason I try to help when I can to repay some of the generosity of the rootschatters in the time they have spent in helping me.
The internet is wonderful.  I am fortunate in that the local archives (with much of my family history) are within travelling distance.  I am sure that rootschatters will continue to do their best to help you particularly with you being so far from the family history information you need.

Many thanks for this, I have looked through the UK site and clicked on "Books" and saw his name on so many publications, I think most of them are the other Mortimer.
I do know now that the other one had a daughter named Emily and he was also in Wrexham.
The Lavinia Riley one is mine and so is the Clack marriage and I am aware of them.
You get into sites I do not have any idea of, I usually just google a name and see if I get anything out of it.
Many thanks

Celia,
Yes this is my Mortimer, he did marry Lavinia Riley. I am curious about the MA, as far as I knew he had a BA which he achieved in 1850 and about which I was kindly sent the info yesterday.
The Welsh lot were also his in that his father was also Mortimer Maurice and he was a son of Joseph Maurice and Elizabeth Gillam, who appear to have been born and married (and worked) in Bristol but they both were buried in Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, which gives a big clue that they originated from there. There did seem to be a lot of Maurice's in Pembrokeshire.
I am looking into just when he was a curate at the Trinity Church Hotwells, as he married Lavinia at St. Andrews Church in Clifton, Bristol.
I know he was also a vicar at Crantock in Cornwall and also at St. Bude's Lewisham where they lived at Peak Hill Gardens.
many thanks for your reply
