Speirs/Spiers of Toowoomba and Ipswich
« on: Saturday 20 September 14 11:40 BST (UK) »
Good evening
hoping someone can assist me with a little more detail.
I am researching Annie Spiers (Speirs) MS Welch (Welsh) from Kilbarchan Scotland B: 1833 and D: 29 January 1899 Ipswich Queensland.  I have her death cert.  Her religion is Congregational and is buried in the Ipswich cemetery.  She is recorded as being in Australia 33 years.

Husband was William Spiers.  They married in Kilbarchan.  I think I have the correct connection that he died in Ipswich in 1911.

In 1871 they lived in Darling street Ipswich were 2 of their children (John and Anna) both died of croup within 7 days of each other in July. -- I haven't been able to find a website for a grave search in the Ipswich cemetery, can anyone tell me if this is available online somewhere?

I am also very confused about one (or two) of their daughters.  I have found BDM & Ancestry.com records for the following born to Annie Welch and William Speirs:
1867 Died  Annie Isabella Speirs
1869 Birth:  Annie Isabella Speirs
1871 Died: Anna Isabella Spiers - she was born in Toowoomba and her death cert states 2years old - croup
--Any insight or thoughts on this mismatch of dates would be appreciated as I have not been able to locate any info on the Annie Isabella D 1867 either in Australia or Scotland.

Also on Annie Welch's death cert one of her living children is recorded as Mary aged 29.  This would mean she was born c 1870 but I cannot find any BDM record for her --Again any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in anticipation for reading and considering this.  Any further insight to this family would be greatly appreciated.
Kind regards
Blacksmithy

You SPEIRS family arrived QLD on the Samarang 13 Nov 1865.
There were three children with them on arrival.

William-34yrs
Ann-32yrs
William-10yrs
Ann-8yrs
Mary-5yrs

Passenger list is online here:

http://www.archives.qld.gov.au/Researchers/ImmigrationIndexes/Documents/Samarang_1865_QSA_Item_ID_18474.pdf

That will also answer your question about the TWO daughters by the name Annie.
The first one died after emigrating with her parents & the second one born & died in QLD.
So I guess you have 3 children born o/s to find  ;)

In the 1861 census the Spiers family are living in Caldwegate Carlisle. Son William age 6 born Scotland, and the two daughters, Ann 4 and Mary 1, both born Carlisle. Father William is a Railway Guard, aged 30. Wife Ann is 28.

This looks like Mary:

Births Mar 1860
SPIERS  Mary
Carlisle
10b 403

Maybe Ann:

Births Dec 1856
SPEARS  Ann Isabella
Carlisle
10b 381

Oops, I see you already know all this ...

Woo, thank you so much team, this is more information than I could ever have imagined, I was obviously thinking inside the box and not outside.  This now completes my search of Annie Welch, her siblings and her forefathers.  Off to further my search in Australia and ultimately NZ.

Again this has been an exciting find - grateful thanks

I a sure that your Annie Spiers is related to John Spiers, born about 1806 in Kilbarchan, Renfrewshire. John married Margaret Robertson and they had 6 children, but none was Annie. Could Annie be a cousin? I am trying to find out more about the Speirs family of Renfrewshire, and indeed John and Margaret's descendants.

Hi
just having trouble with my computer at present so hope this gets to you ok.  Ann (Annie) Speirs had the maiden name Welch.  Her husband was William Speirs and I have tracked his death cert which gives his parents as John Speirs (Storekeeper) and Mary MS unknown.  He died age 83 in Ipswich Australia in 1911 making his DOB about 1828.   It records his place of birth as Leith Scotland.

Hope this sheds some light for you.
