Alexander Augustus Smith
« on: Wednesday 27 October 10 07:54 BST (UK) »
Hello all,

I would appreciate very much some help trying to find Alexanders parents names,or any siblings,  I know its a big ask with the name Smith.
All I know is he was born in Montrose in1832, he was apprenticed at sea and left Scotland in 1855 as a 2nd mate on the 'Oriental', he then settled in New Zealand.

Many thanks for reading

hi Leandra  :)

tree here -

http://worldconnect.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:1682103&id=I76093511

it gives his birth as 27th july 1832 although nothing matches this on the IGI

i take it his marriage(1857/8 ?) or death certs.(1917 ?) give no further clues

Hello ev,

Thanks so much for taking time to look for me, and for the link. I think I will have to get his death certificate now, it may be the only option left :)

Kind regards

Hi Leandra - I am a newbie to Rootschat so please forgive me if you have posted information that I am seeking, but have not been able to access it.

I came across some of your correspondence regarding the elusive AA Smith, who is my husband's 2nd great grandfather.  Funnily the only place where the middle name Augustus appears is on his marriage certificate.

I wanted to reply to your "closed" chat, but couldn't figure out how to do it. Have you had any luck confirming his parents?  I similarly thought it would be John and Grace (Alexander born 1832), but on finding the census for this family, Alexander appears in it as a flax weaver in 1851, when he was already apprenticed to the merchant navy in 1848.  I found another Alexander with parents David and Catharine Feddis, (Alexander born 1831) who does not appear in that family's 1851 census, although a brother "seaman" does and another brother who is a "ships carpenter".  This looks pretty exciting as his family.

Would love to hear back from you -

Regards

Hi Vicky,

I did not have any joy confirming Alexander's parents, unfortunatly his death certificate did not name them, it states he was born in Montrose, Scotland and had been in NZ for 60 years when he died, and does not mention Augustus being his middle name! I would be happy to email a copy if you don't have it. I am connected to AA via is son William Johns daughter Eleanor Cecilia (Queenie)

Cheers
