Lynch of St Johnstown 1901
« on: Saturday 06 September 14 20:37 BST (UK) »
Hi, I managed to find my 3xG grandparents, Hugh and Bella Lynch in the 1901 census living at St Johnstown- but they have vanished by the 1911 census and dont show up on Irish searches  after this, apart from leaving Ireland does anyone have any other ideas of how to track them?

Thanks

I take it from this they went to Scotland http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=423964.msg5398634#msg5398634
So oblivious question first, have you looked for them there in 1911?

They were still in Ireland up to 1917 as far as I know, just after that my great grandad got married and moved to scotland, it's his parents and siblings I don't see after 1901 when they appear in st Johnstown in the census

A remarkable coincidence except for the ages of Hugh senior and the last 3 children

Dathai, I had seen that family when looking for the family at first, though didn't know then my great great granda was called Hugh, or the names of any of the siblings. Hugh seniors age seems to leap from 35 to 69 in only 10 years and that had made me dismiss them without looking further. The names of the children seem to be too much of a coincidence for it not to be them

Thanks for making me look at this more closely

When I look at the address given on the 1910 census it seems they were only a couple of houses away from the Free Derry mural seen in a multitude of news reports across the troubles. Their house seems to have been right in front of me for years, remarkable

While 35 to 69 is quite a leap, it's not unusual for people to age 20 years between the census, it's connected to the introduction of pensions.
The Enumerator or witness appears to have filled in the 1901 census this may in some way explain the difficulties with the ages and slight difference in names.
In 1901 Hugh cannot write, in 1911 he can, three possibilities, he couldn't write in 1901 due to injury, he had lesson between times ( the writing is very neat for a man of his age) or one of the children filled in 1911.

If you look at this page of the 1911 census you will see the actual street address (rather than 26 which is only the number of the household on that particular census)-
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai002844038/

Google Street View shows the area now redeveloped.
