Hi, is it possible that William died in 1889? i ask as I found 2 Janes on their own in the 1891 census and also a John age 17 born Glasgow working as a farm servant in Bothwell,Lanark on the Shanks farm. Found marriage for William and Jane 30 April 1873 High Church, Paisley, Renfrew. Hope this helps, Kim

Yes, that 1873 marriage is the right one, so I have maiden name for Jane. I'll search the index for her death as well.  I have an account but am currently out of credits. I'll add any deaths I find to my list for next batch of credits.

Hi Fred, was looking at Scotlands people and they have deaths of 2 Jane Houstons between 1891 and 1935.

Deaths:

Jane Houston

other names: Myles/White
age 52
St George,Edinburgh

Jane Houston

there wasn't anything under Whyte. Did she remarry or have a forename before Jane?  kim

Hello Kim,

The marriage and the birth reg for son John just have the name as Jane Whyte. It's possible Jane remarried but then there should be a death for William that fits. Any trace of son John?

Fred, in the 1901 Scotland census I found the following;

1901 Scotland census:
2 Neilston Street, Paisley, Renfrewshire

John Houston born 1872 Glasgow son occ:hot presser
Jane Houston born 1848 Stirlingshire head of house  occ: housekeeper
Jan Houston born 1881 Paisley  daughter occ:thread winder

Is this possibly the family you are looking for??

also, found something curious in ancestry family trees. A John Houston born 27 Jan 1874 to a Matthew Whyte Houston and his wife Ann McEwan. Could this Matthew be a relation?? Are the Whytes and Houstons more connected than you think? They appear in Maryhill,Lanark in 1881 census.
I looked for Birth of Matthew and he was born 29 Aug 1847 in Kilbarchan,Renfrew to parents John Houston and Mary Whyte. This may definitely be a relation.

Thank you very much.  It helps build up a picture of the family and those probably related.

There is one difference in that pob for Jane is Stirling in 1901 and Paisley in 1881.

William's father was a John HOUSTON born abt 1820 Paisley.  He married Sarah Nicol ANGEL on 23 Jun 1843 at Paisley. Her parents were Thomas ANGEL (a very rare name in Scotland) and Mary CLARK.

No Matthew on the Angel side. The 'Gifford' comes from the Angel side. Stephen Gifford was in the army with Thomas Angel.  I don't know where the 'Mark' comes from.
