Help required with location of places in Parish of East Kilbride late 18th C
« on: Wednesday 22 October 14 07:03 BST (UK) »
Can anyone assist in confirming these place names and perhaps locate them on a map for me please.  I've been searching for ages with no success.  Unsure whether they are the names of areas within the parish, or perhaps names of farms, estates or whatever.

The one that looks like Startyshall is from an OPR birth dated 1784, the other that looks like Cafold is from 1794.

The subsequent marriages and generation of children were mostly located in Bothwellhaugh so no real clues from that.

Thanks
Dave

In the Rev. David Ure's book on East Kilbride from 1793, he lists some place names. I think the first one could be STARTUPHALL but I cannot find anything ending in FOLD.
Perhaps the family names may give a clue to the farm names.

Regards,
Baird

Excellent Baird,
Pretty sure it is indeed Startuphill .  I can see that now, although it looks more like "...hall"
Thank you.

Family name(s) are of no help in this instance that I've found.
The names in question were a Roberton who went on to marry.... you won't believe the co-incidence..... Baird.  :)

I think there was at least one coal mine at Bothwellhaugh owned by a Baird family. Let me know if you want any East Kilbride Bairds.

I take back what I said about the name not being a clue.  It might just be.

In the attached map (screen print from streetmap.co.uk), there is a Startup Hill (where the orange arrow is) near Lamington.  Just to the west of that is a village called Roberton.

It's a bit further south than I would have expected but it's food for thought.  Travelling from that area to the NE of EK parish, you would actually pass through Bothwellhaugh.  40 miles right enough, but still.

More research required, but thanks for your input.  Very helpful.

I'll keep in mind your Baird connection and offer of info on EK family.

The Baird I have furthest back that I will be looking for next would be William Baird, who married a Janet Graham (circa 1770?).  It is their son John Baird c1777 that married the Roberton and lived at Bothwellhaugh.  I've just really started looking at this line so don't have too much info yet.  William Baird and Janet Graham would be my 5xg grandparents.   From the little I've searched so far, 3 of their children were born Bothwell / Bothwellhaugh but as you'll know, EK's not a million miles away.

Interested in the Meikle Dripps connection as Baird Brothers from there were fined in the 1600's for not attending the Episcopalian Church in Carmunnock, being dyed in the wool Covenanters.

If you come across a marriage between a Robert Graham (b 1780)and an Annie Bogle (b 1785) in East Kilbride in 1803 we may have a connection as their son Robert married a Baird in East Kilbride in 1834.
