Robert Cathcart Hunter Ross
« on: Sunday 04 December 11 21:18 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I'm trying to find out about Robert Cathcart Hunter Ross born the 04 Jan 1829 in Angus.
Compared to his siblings, Robert has a very grand sounding name and it has caught my eye  :)

I was wondering if anybody knows anything about the name or if anybody can find him on any census records please as I'm having a hard time finding him  :-\

Thank you  :) :)

Hello,
Thank you for your reply  :)
I wonder if the clan is where his name originated from? It would be great if it was  ;D

His parents were James born 1795 in Coupar, and Isobel/Bell born 1807
His siblings are:
David 1822
James 1822
George 1826
William 1831
Thomas Miller 1833
Martin 1835
Bell 1837
Jean 1840
All born in Dundee  :)

James Ross looks to be on the 1851, 1861 and 1871 census in Dundee (as a 'visitor', in different households) so his death cert should provide his mother's maiden surname enabling you to dig a bit deeper there ...

The FDCA site lists the death of a Robert Ross, aged 17 months in July 1830, an Isabella Ross aged 1 month in Dec 1837, a George Ross in Jan 1828 aged 20 months

http://www.fdca.org.uk/HowffR09.pdf

No mention of Martin though

Thank you both so much for your help  ;D I'm really lost when it comes to researching my Scottish ancestors  ;D According to familysearch, his mother's surname was Geekie, I don't know why but that just makes me smile  ;D

Robert died of  Water in the head?  :-\ That doesn't sound very nice at all  :-\
Thank you for the file Gali, will have a look through and see if anyone else in my tree is on there  :) :)

James Ross is listed as living with a Jean Geekie, b. 1780 in Kettins, on 1851 census

Water in the brain/ hydracephalus can be treated today ... sad stuff.

If you are lost re your Scottish ancestors then just post away here, lots of people are happy to help!

Great find! Do you think that could be his mother?

It's very sad seeing stuff that is easily treated today being a cause of death  :-\

Thank you, I think I will have to cos you've both been lotsa help!  :) :)
