Scotnish Farm
« on: Friday 31 January 14 20:19 GMT (UK) »
My Mum Catherine Gordon Colquhoun's birthplace is given as Scotnish, North Knapdale, Argyll. Her father was a farm manager at this time and she was born at the farm in 1918. I would like to know if there was a farm called Scotnish or is that the name of an area? Thank you.

Thank you Gadget. I've attached a photo of the farm house - not sure when it was taken. Does anyone know how I could find out the exact years when my Grandparents and their family were at this farm?

1911 census and the 1915 & 1920 Valuation records might help with their arrival date. Those records are on Scotlandspeople.

Later Valuation records are available in NRS in Edinburgh, but not on-line yet.

I know they were at Scotnish sometime between 1914-1921 but they don't appear on either the 1915 nor the 1920 valuation. It's possible that they were there between the two valuations but I'll maybe never find out the exact dates. Thank you for your help.

I think there were annual valuations. SP have only put them on-line at 5 year intervals, but I believe you can check the intervening years by going to Edinburgh.

Unfortunately going to Edinburgh to check for annual valuations isn't possible as I stay in Shetland which is too far to travel. Does anyone know if there would be any other records available which would confirm when my ancestors were at Scotnish farm? I know they were definitely living on the farm in October 1918 - April 1919. I know this from my mum's birth and christening. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

This farm belonged to my great grandparents (Kenneth and Caroline Walker), who would have been the owners in 1918. Scotnish was then tenanted by people called Archie and Chrissie Maculloch. It was then sold to Blondie Hassler (Cockshell Heroes).

Hope that helps.
