Searching for father of Benjamin Reid b1848
« on: Wednesday 19 November 14 22:37 GMT (UK) »
My great-great-great-grandfather was Benjamin Reid b1848 in Liberton. He married Elizabeth Hutchinson in 1868. His death record says he was the illegitimate son of Benjamin Reid (gamekeeper) and Jane Denholm (field worker) and was 47 years of age when he died in 1895. That would make his birth year 1848. I have searched scotlandspeople and can find no record of his birth so cannot find details of his father apart from the information on the death record.

Can anyone help point me in the right direction, please?

Have you checked under both surnames for his birth?
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

Hi and welcome to Rootschat

In 1851 he is Reid and living with his Denholm grandparents and mother Jane shown as Denholm - do you already have that entry?

Is any occupation shown for his father?

There is an 1841 entry for a Benjamin Reid in Midlothian aged 30  (Jane was born 1829).  He appears to be married - no children.  Occ was cart wright

Hi and thanks for the posts. I have all of the information and images for Benjamin from the 1851 census onwards. It is his birth and information on his father that I need so I can move further up the tree and get to the earlier ancestors.

CaroleW, thanks, I'll have a look at the 1841 Census

I have checked the 1841 census and don't think it is the right Benjamin Reid. Looking at the actual image I also think the transcription is wrong, the age should be 50 as his wife is 47. His occupation is listed as a grocer whereas 'my' Benjamin may have been a gamekeeper.

Thanks for the suggestions, they are helpful even if they turn out to be dead ends.

I don't think you have looked at the same one as I found.  I mentioned above that Benjamin was a cart wright - not a grocer

Hi MGMidget,

I suppose you have this, he would have been a Miner at the Gilmerton Pit the nickname was ( The Brozie or Brosie ) it's a shame there is no number for the Cottage as some are still standing.

Ravenscroft Street is quite long about a quarter mile it had Cottages and a few farms in fact the whole of Gilmerton was like that.

Cheers.

Archie.
