Does any one know name of house ?
« on: Sunday 20 July 14 16:58 BST (UK) »
I am trying to help a friend find the name of a house where her grandmother worked in the early 1960's.
It was in Gilmerton Road Edinburgh on the right hand side heading towards  Gilmerton village . It was just up from the George and Agnes Murray home which is now called Erskine House.
On the site is now Gilmerton Primary School.
It was quite a large house I believe with a drive up to it.
Thanks

Hi Midlad,

the Murray home was originally Moredun House and named Gutters and Goodtrees before that.

Hibee is correct but it was known as Gilmerton House owned by the Gilmour family, it eventually fell into ruin and was demolished, it was near the Gay Gordons Pub at Hyvots and near the Lang Loan.

The only other house I can think of is where Southfield Hospital is ( Southfield House ) and was at one time owned by the Salveson family ( Fish Suppliers ), they donated it to the NHS I think this might be the one but it is off Lasswade Road not Gilmerton Road.

Cheers.

Archie.

Hi Everyone,
Thank you all for your input.
This house Archie is where Gilmerton Primary School is now -- Moredun Dykes Road had a high wall and it was behind there. I walked along that road many a time with my mother who visited an old lady in Hyvots Bank Avenue . The prefabs were still in Hyvots then .
The entrance to it was just about where the houses are known as "The Spinney ".
I'm beginning to think it might not be as large as I seem to remember it but it had iron gates in the Gilmerton Road and a drive up to it.

Midlad,
I wonder what "the Spinney" was before it was developed for housing? The Murray Home appears to have been a little too far north to fit your description. My map shows a fairly large building with a driveway off Moredun Dykes Road, but perhaps that is Gilmerton Primary School?

Hi IanB,

We were in the area yesterday and went to have another look round "The Spinney" housing estate is where the house was.
The entrance to the school is of Moredun Dykes Road.
If I remember correctly the school  was built c 1964 at the time of the Poulson affair.
