Hi John

Family Search here https://familysearch.org/search offers an excellent and free index to start searching on. Not 100% but a good place to start. There are other sources, and the official pay to view site, www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/ Have you researched in Scotland before?

Is this George and Isabella's marriage in 1850? https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XY37-7QB

So, from what you have, this would be the family in 1851:

George Hendry 26 miller (corn) b. Alyth
Isobel Hendry 23
Betesy Hendry 11 Months
George Hendry 2 nephew b. Dundee

Address: Old Manse Eassie, Eassie and Nevay, Angus

1861:

George Hendry 35 miller b. Alyth
Isabella Hendry 32 b. Kilspindie, Perthshire
Betsay Hendry 10
Martha Hendry 6 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FQ94-4XX
Catherine Hendy 4 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FQ94-46X
Jean Hendy 1 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FQ94-7YN

Address: Mill Of Fjal, Alyth

Other children showing for them after this date are:

Agnes 1862 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FQ94-C5Z
George 1866 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FQXD-FLP
Isabella 1866 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FQ94-Q7K

Martha's 1855 birth cert mentioned above would give you additional info on parents. 1855, the first year of official registration in Scotland, and BMD entries ran over two pages of the register.

John, the only way to confirm George's parents' details would be from looking at his death cert online on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk. It is pay to view but costs are reasonable. He showed as still alive up to the 1891 census didn't he, in Carmyllie, Angus? Wife Isabella also shows as still alive then. Her death cert would also include her parents' names.

There is this possible birth entry for example, a few years earlier, https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/VQ7N-ZQH  However, parents' names don't seem to feature in the names of the children for George and Isabella. There is also this possible entry for Isabella given her birth place from the censuses https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/VQ7B-638

Thanks Monica, yes I did try FS, but found myself guessing most of the time, I will look later at the links you have sent and see if anything jumps out. I have memberships coming out of my ears, Just when do say enough is enough, ah well, you did mention that George 1851 was a nephew, any idea who his mother was ??
Thanks again Monica

Don't laugh when I say Scotlands People is pay as you go  ;) For £7, you get 30 units. For these 30 units you could view up to 5 original BMD images or census images. Compares well with the cost of certs from the GRO.

I would say both George and Isabella both died in Carmyllie, Angus. George in 1898 possibly and then Isabella in 1893 (your searches for married women in Scotland let you include the woman's maiden name). This is just from using the search screen on SP to see what shows and results.

Regarding the young nephew that showed with George and Isabella in 1851, can't see anything for him on Family Search or Scotlands People...but then his birth would be before the start of official registration in Scotland from 1855. Before this date, only about a third of BMD events were registered in the Old Parish Registers (OPRs).

As you say, guessing game until confirmation comes along...

I can't easily see nephew George so far on the 1861 census (following the entry where he showed as a 2yr old with George and Isabella). However, 1871 has this entry:

Margaret Henry 67 Kirriemuir, Forfarshire
George Henry 23 mill worker b. Dundee
John Herald 17 boarder Clerk (linner Mt Office)

Address: 33 South George St, St Andrews Angus

In 1881, there is a possible for this George, boarding with the Hill family and working as a cab driver.

Jumping back to 1851, there is this entry (trying to follow through on potential grandmother Margaret who could be a mother to your George...maybe!):

Margret Hendry 49 b. Kirriemuir
James Hendry 26 son, corn miller, b. Airlie, Forfarshire...a good occupation match potentially with George
Charles Hendry 22 son, warper, b. Airlie, Forfarshire
Isabella Hendry 11 daughter b. Cortachy, Forfarshire

Address: Newtown, Kirriemuir Angus

...continuing our guesses  ::)

1841:

James Hendey 40 Mealmiller
Margt Hendey 35
James Hendey 15 Mealmiller Ap
Charles Hendey 12
Margt Hendey 5
Isabella Hendey 2
Thomas Hendey 3 Weeks
Anne Lamont 15 female servant
Margt Allan 15 female servant

Address: Cuttyhangh, Inverarity Angus

Making big guessing leaps from this entry...to this one as a possible for George in 1841 also:

Andrew Milne 30 Meat Miller
Mary Lamond 26
David Lamond 23 Meat Miller
William Lamond 18 clerk
George Hendry 18 Meat Miller b. Scotland
Isabella Barty 15 female servant (FS)
Ann Milne 25 female servant (FS)

Address: New Mill Of Mains, Mains and Strathmartine Angus

And that is as far as my guessing can stretch to  :P
