Jospehine Smith aka Daisy Chilton, Cockermouth area
« on: Monday 31 January 11 11:52 GMT (UK) »
Hi All

Does anyone know of the Moffat's, Smith's or Weir's detailed below?

Frances Moffat (born Sep Qtr 1873, Torpenhow, Cumbria), married Joseph Smith Jun Qtr 1893

Joseph Smith died Jun Qtr 1893 aged 24 years (cause of death unknown), Cockermouth

Josephine Smith was born Sep Qtr 1893, Cockermouth

Frances Smith married William Chilton Dec Qtr 1895, Cockermouth

On the 1901 census, Josephine Smith was living with her uncle, John Moffat, his wife, Jane, their adopted son George Lomas, and John’s sister Mary.  It states that Josephine was born at Brampton Cumberland about 1894.

In 1901, Frances Chilton was living with her husband, William, at Haltwhistle, Northumberland, with their children, Nancy and Will.

At some point, Josephine must have lived with them, as my grandmother remembered her, and she wasn’t born until 1915.

Josephine married Mathias Weir in 1917, so when my grandmother remembered her, she must have been visiting after her marriage perhaps.

Frances died 1949 at Haltwhistle aged 78.
William died 1934 at Haltwhistle, aged 67.

Frances and William's children were:

Nancy (1898)
William (1900) (known as Will)
Tom (1902) (not Thomas)
Mary (1905)
George Edwin (1906 - died in infancy)
Annie (1907)
Ester (1910 - died in infancy)
John (known as Jack) (1912)
Jane (known as Jinny, my grandmother) (1915)

From these children were 16 grandchildren for Frances (not including Josephine's), of which only 3 are still living.

It took me a long time to find Josephine, as within the family she was always known as Daisy Chilton, and it took me sometime to find Francis' first marriage to ascertain her real name (although I did know Daisy was a nickname).

I believe Josephine Weir died sometime in the 1940/1950's as Jospehine Weir died Jun Qtr 1937 aged 44, and my grandmother remembered going to her funeral. Apparently she did of Pernicious Anaemia (which runs in the family).  I believe Mathias Weir died Sep Atr 1944 aged 70.  If I am correct with this, it means there was a 19 year age gap between Mathias and Josephine.

Due to the fact I know little of this side of the family, I'm hoping someone else will be researching them, and will be willing to share information.  I do have some photographs of Frances and William.

Thanks

Hi All

I've been looking into this a bit more, and have found 6 children whom I believe belong to Josephine and Mathias Weir.

The children were all born Cockermouth Registration district, between Dec Qtr 1917, and Jun Qtr 1931.  The youngest would be 80 now, so I'll not post details, just in case any of them may still be living.

The children's basic details are as follows:

Dec Qtr 1917 - Female - married Sep Qtr 1938
Sep Qtr 1919 - Male - married Jun Qtr 1939
Jun Qtr 1921 - Female - married Mar Qtr 1941
Jun Qtr 1923 - Male - married Sep Qtr 1943
Mar Qtr 1925 - Female
Jun Qtr 1931 - Male

Any help would be most gratefully received.
