Where I'm at with this...........

Contacted the Family Research Centre-   Unable to answer the question.

Contacted the 'go to' man at Auckland
Library Family History-                            Ditto.

Contacted Auckland Archives-                 Unable to access Family Search website through their
                                                           browser. Not able to answer the question.

I am now awaiting a response from Wellington Archives, this having been suggested by the Auckland branch.

Thank you for your email of the 14th of August regarding the remarks column of the manifest of the 'Apelles'

I have had a look at this record and have also got my colleagues opinion and we cannot say for certain what this entry relates to.

There are a few options:

·         the berth no

·         the cost incurred in immigrating

·        or an additional file which relates

I'm sorry we couldn't have been of more assistance.

I would think the last option is the most likely. This being the case, where to now, if anywhere? Does anyone have any ideas?

In answer to your original question, 1245 is what's called a Passage Order number. It's the link between the Passenger Lists and the Nomination Registers.

Archives in Wellington hold fourteen Nomination Registers. I don't know if there are others stored elsewhere but I suspect not.

Nominated Passengers - List of Passage Orders

This series is comprised of volumes (a.k.a registers) containing additional information on nominated immigrants to New Zealand.

This information can include the name and address of nominators or sponsors, cost of passage, future employment, etc.

The value of the information found depends on the diligence of the clerk filling in the register.
 
In order to use the registers you should have a specific passage order number, found in the remarks column in the passenger list.

It seems a bit bizarre that so few registers have survived. It's not as if they would have ever left the office.

That is brilliant! Thank you so much Beg. I assume I am correct in that there is only one Auckland register and that is for 1873? Never mind, at least I now know what the numbers represent.

In view of the response received from Archives, (see above) I have e-mailed your information to them in Wellington and await their comments.
