Does anyone know if the 1926 Irish Census will be online in the near future?

Regards

The 1926 census is covered under the 100 year rule at the moment, but there is talk of trying to change that and release it early.

At the risk of stating the obvious, that covers the Free State (later Republic) only.

I'm sure someone here will correct me if I get this wrong, but I think the 1926 interim census for Northern Ireland was lost during the war (whether to damage or deliberate destruction, I can't remember).  That means that, after 1911,  the next census available for NI will be the 1937 one, which was limited in the questions it asked.  The next full census was the one taken in 1951.

All mentioned here - but doesn't mentioned 1926 destroyed:

However, this, and other sites, say 1926 was destroyed during WWII:

1926 NI destruction mentioned here as well:

http://www.bagenalscastle.com/ancestry/01_where/02b_cens.htm

That's at least an NI source.  However, none of these is a primary source, strictly speaking.  Don't suppose anyone's asked the question directly of an official body?

Looks like the project to release the 1926 census early has the support of Irish cabinet.  Minister Jimmy Deenihan has been pushing for this.

The 1926 census not only asks for County of birth but also the townland as well as age in years and months.

See:  CIGO news

It's unclear when it will be launched, and I do remain a somewhat of a skeptic, given Ireland's current financial condition.  Still, I can hope.
PLEASE POST YOUR QUESTIONS TO THE BOARD, NOT THROUGH PM, so that everybody can take a shot at answering your question and benefit from the information.  I cannot respond to requests through private emails.

Has progress on the release of the 1926 census stalled or is it still grinding its way through 'officialdom'?

Like most people I would be grateful if this census was available on line for free, but in these straightened times I don't have any problem about it being viewed on a chargeable basis. However if it is to be access on a chargeable basis I do hope it will be not just on pay-per-view but also as part of a subscription.
