Cillini. Burial grounds of the shunned and unbaptised
« on: Wednesday 04 June 14 09:01 BST (UK) »
Interesting article on Cillini

Final burial places for the unbaptised or those deemed unworthy

When I look at all the names in my tree
or the number of children referred to on census returns
I always wonder where they went and unfortunately
this is probably the answer for some

Terribly terribly sad  :'( the idea of  it being unacceptable to mourn an unbaptised child is just hard to comprehend.

Yes Sinann There is much coming to light

I have looked at some of the reactions in the media, world of politics and social media to this story and it saddens me that for all the changes that have occurred in the world and our better education that we cannot see that we are still prejudiced and abusive in our ways; perhaps the religious orphanages of 100-150 years ago are gone but before them people were cast into the street and died where they fell and in some cases lucky to be buried; and today we still have homeless and helpless people. People who are abused for their colour or creed or something else.

I wonder in 100 years time will our descendants be looking at our immigration centres and wonder why we were so cruel to displaced people, looking at our surplus of buildings in NAMA and wonder why families had no where to live, look at our waste of food why people were hungry?

It's one of those days!

We'll probably never rid ourselves of all our senseless behaviours be hopfully we are improving, although yes there are times these days when you wonder if that is even possible.
As much as we give out about the media at least they keep shining a light on these things now, the silence in the past let it continue for so long.

Our parish priest blessed a cillín a few years back. I thought it was a nice idea. I think at least some cillíní are marked on Ordnance Survey maps. I don't know if this has been done elsewhere but if not, it might be something parishes could organise.

True Sonas that was lovely of your local priest

I noticed today that the BBC covered the story from Tuam
Perhaps this will bring to the fore many forgotten places of burial

Looks like it time to start giving out about the media again.
The woman who did the research is upset, she never said the babies were dumped in a septic, she said they are buried in the same place as the septic tank and she never claimed they are all there she just hasn't found evidence of them being buried anywhere else.

I feel for the lady and her work which was undertaken for probably a different reason
But there is still a huge anomaly in the records

There are official death records
There are no formal burials in official graveyards
There is a known burial site in close proximity to the former home
2 and 2 equals ?
Only an excavation will truly answer the questions being asked here

and in other places
