Nicholsons from Sligo
« on: Thursday 24 November 11 20:06 GMT (UK) »
Hi i'm trying to find living relatives from my ancestors from Sligo. I think they may have come from Drumcliff. Some of their names were Gulielmus, Dominicus, Maria, Brigida and Catherina. All Nicholsons and all from around 1846 till 1856. I would like to find anyone who has these people also on their family tree. Many thanks

Hello and welcome to rootschat.

You presumably have these names from Church records?. Do you have any other details about your Nicholsons?
Griffiths Valuation has several Nicholsons about that time. Drumcliff
Did your family leave Sligo?

The names you listed are Latin forms of the names William, Dominic, Mary, Bridget and Catherine.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi guys and thanks for replies. Yes i did get these details froma church record. My cousin located them for me. Why would Latin form of the name be used ? I have another branch so i will put that on a seperate post (i hope that's correct) I believe my family all left Sligo, to the best of my knowledge, the spread out to Scotland and America.

All help very much appreciated.

Roman Catholic records (baptisms, marriages, etc.) generally listed Christian names in Latin (remember Mass would have also been in Latin until fairly recently)- not sure when the practice stopped.

Hello again,
Are these children all the same family? Who was their father?
There are several Nicholsons in Drumcliff in Griffiths Valuation- taken around the same time.

It looks as though you have their details - and from your first post you are looking for family connections (other people searching this family) to the present day in Scotland and USA.  Is that right?
Do you have those details? When did the family leave Sligo?
