Gavin Paterson/Provost of Hamilton/Lochside House
« on: Thursday 05 January 06 21:25 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone have any information about Gavin Paterson who, at the time of his death in 1889, was Provost of Hamilton? He married Jean Harvie in 1855 and, following her death, wed Margaret Jackson in 1884. They resided in Lochside House, Hamilton. Is Lochside House still in existence? Any information about Gavin Paterson and his descendants would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hello

Thanks for your reply to my query. Yes, Gavin Paterson,,the architect you mention who died in 1934, was the son of Gavin Paterson (Provost of Hamilton) and Jean Harvie. Gavin Paterson the architect was my great uncle.

Cheers,

2. William 9 Dec 1857 in Anderston
3. Jane Harvey 25 Dec 1859 in Govan
4. Thomas 13 Feb 1862 in Hamilton

PS: The main google reference to Lochside House seems to be for a property in New Cumnock built in late 19thC and now a hotel.

Hello all,
I see this thread is in relation to a person called Gavin Paterson who was an architect I think way have lived in the house that I now live in. I live on Bent Road in Hamilton and I know that the house was once called  Lochside Cottage. I would be very interested if anyone could verify this and even have a picture of Mr Paterson. I have been hunting high and low online for the past few months as I find this very interesting and I hope I'm on the right track.

 I appreciate any help.

Best Regards.

Craig.

Hi Craig

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

Looks to have been a Paterson living at Lochside House until at least 1934. See www.scottisharchitects.org.uk/architect_full.php?id=200407

Painting here for Provost Gavin Paterson www.bbc.co.uk/arts/yourpaintings/paintings/provost-gavin-paterson-190837

Have you checked at local archives to see what material is available?

Thanks Monica,

It looks as though I should turn my attention more to Gavin Paterson Senior as Gavin Paterson the architect was only born here before moving to Lochside House from Lochside Cottage. Funny how the two properties have a very similar name. I have asked the local museum if they have any information but they said it would take some time to look into, which is fine.
I have attached a link to an old map of Hamilton which shows my house (Lochside Cottage) on the south of the town on the road leading to Bent Farm.

Thanks.

Craig.

Craig, the 1862 Post Office directory certainly showed the family at Lochside Cottage, Bent Road http://digital.nls.uk/directories/browse/pageturner.cfm?id=89733172&mode=transcription

So, we have a likely painting for Gavin Snr. You are also likely to find futher PO directory listings for him. What other material would you like to find for him (Gavin Snr.)?

Let's not forget that this was Rodeo's original post....With the time difference due to location, Rodeo should be online later and will hopefully add more to what was here before.
