Precognition - help needed
« on: Tuesday 05 August 14 15:30 BST (UK) »
On Scotlands People, I’ve just found the death certificate of one of my ancestors.  His DC shows he died from “Burns to the hand and arm” and refers to the RCE.  But the RCE adds nothing more than the original DC.  ???

His DC shows date of death as 14May 1910 and the RCE is dated stamped at the Procurator Fiscal’s Office on 14 June 1910 (the following month) with another handwritten date of July10 1911 (the following year) in the top left hand corner.

I’m told that the PF's involvment could possibly mean that there was more to the death, possibly suspicious/foul play and perhaps even a subsequent trial?  Any ideas on how I can find out more about the accident (or deliberate!) burning of his hand and arm?

Any ideas, suggestions or help would be much appreciated.

Newspaper is a good place to start. http://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk

or NAS http://www.nas.gov.uk/onlineCatalogue click on SEARCH and enter his name and date

Did he die at work, at home or was he found somewhere else.

William ADAMS bc1850, Coalminer, died on 14 May 1910, aged 56 at Glasgow Royal Infirmary - usual residence Stobey's Land, Shawfield, Rutherglen.   Maybe it was an accident in the mine?

I will try the websites DonM suggests and come back if there is anything.

Thanks to you both for your quick replies.

The involvement of a Procurator Fiscal means the death was sudden or unexplained. It doesn't necessarily mean it was a result of foul play, or that there would be a trial as a result.

Given the cause of death it does sound as if an accident would be the most likely reason.

The Scottish Genealogy Society produced a booklet on RCE entries last year - Ken Nisbet is the author - costs about £3.50. Really useful background reading.
