Walter Saunders/Sanders and his parents
« on: Tuesday 03 June 14 15:49 BST (UK) »
Hi I am getting a bit tangled with this family and could do with a fresh set of eyes please. I am trying to sort out who are the correct sets of parents for Walter Saunders/Sanders (interchangeable on different records!)

Walter Sanders married Mary Ann Bawden parish of Kenwyn 19 3 1848. This marriage states his dad was William a miner. This is def the Walter I am researching.
Censuses consistently say that Walter was born Perran. (1851, 1861 death 1870).

There are several Sanders/Saunders baptisms in the area.
I have located a baptism of a Walter Saunders on 13 2 1825 parish of Perranworthall, dad William a miner mum Ann. Their residence was Greenwith Common.
There is also a baptism of a Walter on 13 3 1825 parish of Perranworthall, dad John and mum Ann. They lived at Lower Pellean. (So a month difference in the baptism date)

I cannot locate the Walter I am looking for in the 1841 census either on his own or with dad William – William and Ann are at Perranworthall with other family and a well researched tree has this whole family emigrating to Australia in 1851 so it is possible that Walter remained behind but they were still his parents. This William married an Ann Rawlings in 1822.

The second Walter has the wrong dad and a different date of baptism and is present with his family in 1841.

How sure can I be that the Sanders/Rawling marriage is the correct set of parents for the Walter I’m researching?

Thanks for looking.

Hi millipede
Yes that's the family I mentioned in my post so that's the census I have and is the one who other people say emigrated to Australia. You can find the details on the ships list.
I don't think he was wrongly listed as William as William was baptised on 6. 5 1827, so a possible younger brother of Walter.

is this the family you're looking at?

1861 Lemon Row, Truro RG9/1559 folio 39 pg 35
Walter Sanders head mar 35 copper miner b. Perranl.
Mary Ann wife 33 b. Feock
Emma dau 13
Lydia dau 11
Frederick son 9
Walter son 5
Anne dau 2
William son 1
children all born Truro

Which would match up with this entry in 1851
Lemon Row HO107/1910 folio 317 pg 33
Walter Sanders head mar 26 tin miner b. Perran
Miriam wife 25 b. Feock
Emma dau 3
Lydia dau 14
John B son 16 porter
Jane dau 10
Ellen dau 7
children all born Truro

Now, Lydia may have been enumerated as 14 years instead of months, but the last 3 children can't be son & daughters to Walter & Mary Ann, but surely are related.

Hi yes this is the family. I noted the ages of the children on the 1851 census and tried to locate births or baptisms for them to work out how they might be related. The two possible that I came up with so far were for Ellen and Jane, the youngest two and found two births in the right time frame under the surname Bawden. I also found a baptism for Ellen where the parents were shown as John and Elizabeth Bawden. This is the name of Mary Ann's parents and in the 1841, Jane is shown as being with John and Elizabeth Bawden together with children Mary, Thomas, Elizabeth and John. There is no Lydia shown. I therefore wondered that whilst the children are shown as daughters and sons, they were in fact children of Mary Ann's parents.

ah, that would exlain why I couldn't spot them as Sanders! Suspect that the age for Lydia should be 14 months, so she matches Lydia aged 11 in the 1861 census. Oh well, doesn't help to make certain which Sanders family is which.

As you can imagine I hunted high and low for births as Sanders/Saunders too !!  I did find a birth of Lydia in Mar q 1850  Truro which fits in with the sibling order later on. The joys of family history :)
