Don't panic!
Margate Library holds the Kentish Gazette from 1769-1869
Our first newspaper started in 1870, Keble's Gazette from 1870-1909
Isel of Thanet Gazette from 1909 to date
Then Thanet Times from 1896-1919 and 1958 to date

Are you planning a trip to the library soon? I was over there today but didn't manage to make it to the library. If you aren't I'll try and get over there next week.

Sad to say there was no mention of Daniel GOWER in the Thanet Times or Thanet Gazette.
I checked headlines and annoucements but nothing.

There was a death annoucement for John Hand but nothing further.

That is above and beyond the call of duty thank you so much, at least I have the date now! Funny it doesn't mention his wife by name, she must have put the announcement in! Pity she couldn't get the spelling on my name right  - hey, ho. Families!!
I am still waiting for his father's (?) death certificate to come from New Zealand for chaper 2 of the saga!

My question arose from the file just below entitled "Herne Bay Watchmaker". The matter being investigated was :-

"I would have thought that the violent death of a cinema manager overseas would have made the local press. Does anyone know what newspaper would have circulated in Herne Bay?" This is alleged to have taken place  in about 1920. If however the Margate hard copy dates back to only 1924, and that is the beginning, then that newspaper will not help.

Thanks, Toby

Hi Toby

I don't think you will have a lot of luck with the Isle of Thanet Gazette. The Isle of Thanet is only actually Margate, Ramsgate and Broadstairs.

See the following:-
In the Herne Bay area there are four local weekly newspapers: the paid-for Herne Bay Gazette and Herne Bay Times, providing news related only to the town, and the free KM Extra and Canterbury Adscene, providing news on the wider Canterbury district area. The KM Group owns Herne Bay Gazette and KM Extra.
KM in this instance means 'Kent Messenger'

 Regards Lizzielogs

The Herne Bay Library has micro-film of local newspapers  and certainly the Herne Bay Press from about 1880 - 1981. They also have a small selection of directories and other books of local interest.
Toby.

Hi All

Is the Thanet Gazette the best local newspaper for researching Ramsgate in the early 20th century?

I see that Margate library only has hard copies going back to 1924. Does anyone know if there are earlier copies archived elsewhere in Kent?

I am looking for information on Arthur W Watson who was the Headmaster of St Lawrence's Boys School in Thanet, Ramsgate from about 1909 until about 1925 and in particular I am trying to discover when he left Ramsgate.  He lived at 32 Dundonald Road, Ramsgate.

Thanks in advance

Ramsgate Library would be the best for Ramsgate papers and their main one was the East Kent Times, this covered Ramsgate and St Lawrence where as the Thanet gazette was more Margate orientated.

Margate Library has papers going back to 1870 for Thanet and this kid 1700s for the Kentish Gazette.

Arthur does not appear in the 1929 Kelly's Directory for Ramsgate

Thanks Suzannah

Do you know what years for the East Kent Times are held at Ramsgate library?
