Galehows near Appleby
« on: Tuesday 31 May 11 09:17 BST (UK) »
Hello,

Does anyone know where Galehows is?

I came across this residence in the familysearch site. According to this website, my ancestor Mark Ellwood was buried 9 June 1805 nr Appleby & his place of residence was Galehows. The reference doesn't say which church.

Thanks,

Gillian

Hi,

I can find no detail apart from Appleby. If I click on the batch number it gives a long list of burial entries also in just Appleby. Looking at their place of residense the church is probably St Michael's but it isn't mentioned.

Sorry to appear stupid, but all I can see is:

indexing project: B00431-7

source film: 1471684

How do I find the parish using them? These numbers are not clickable if you see what I mean!

Here is another example:

birth: 1772
burial: 05 Apr 1841 —Westmoreland, England

record title: England Deaths and Burials, 1538-1991
name: William Ellwood
gender: Male
burial date: 05 Apr 1841
burial place: Westmoreland, England
age: 69
birth date: 1772
indexing project (batch) number: B00431-7
system origin: England-EASy
source film number: 1471684

Have you tried googling Galehows Appleby?   Sounds as if it might be a large farm or small hamlet.
Ah, I have just found it on a 1925 map.  Immediately to the north east of Appleby at about 2 o'clock.   Try looking on an up to date map and see if it is still there.
Not much changes in that area!
