Place Name - near Walden?
« on: Thursday 16 January 14 08:05 GMT (UK) »
An ancestor has given "Pollswoldin and Polhwateton" as his place of birth - somewhere near Walden although I can't find that on the map either.  Can anyone confirm the correct spelling?

Thanks - is that the same as Kings Walden?  I can't even find Walden on the map.

No, they are 2 different places but close to each other on the map.

Look on a map for Hemel Hempstead and go slightly northeast 15-18 miles.

St Pauls Walden is a few miles just outside of Hitchin in Hertfordshire.  Most of the village belongs to the Bowes Lyon family (Queen Mothers Sister).  St Pauls Walden Bury dominates the village.  It is the birthplace of the Queen Mother.  There is a church in the village and a few cottages.
I have a recent picture of the church if you are looking for one.

The following link tells you about the estate.

Kings Walden is a larger village on the far side of the estate, between Hitchin and Whitwell.

The following link gives some history of Kings Walden and an old map of the area.  You can see St Pauls Walden on the same map.

Hi Alison,

I have just checked and have quite a few pictures of St Paul's Walden.  Have sent you a Private Message.
