Archibald Reid
« on: Friday 04 February 11 17:34 GMT (UK) »

I have inherited an oil painting anbd on the reverse it says :

Archibald Reid husband of Charlotte nee Chalmers.

I found a reference on your website and PERTH.

I wonder if anyone can help me further.....I would love to know more about this man and have his painting restored.

Hi Philip

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

Could the painting you have be from the mid 1850s period perhaps?

I can see the reference you found for a birth or christening of a daughter Catherine to an Archibald Reid and Charlotte Chalmers from here www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=280730.0 in 1833.

This looks a possible 1841 census entry:

Archibald Reid 35, writer
Charlotte Reid 30
Anne Reid 13
Douglas Reid 11
Catharine Reid 9
Charlotte Reid 8
Jane Reid 6
Robina Reid 5
Joanna Reid 4
Margery Reid 2
Eliza Scott 15, Governess
Isabella Swart 20, servant
Isabella Allan    20, servant
Elisabeth Corelli 20, servant

Address: Eleho Cottage, Rhynd, Perthshire

A couple of things to note with the 1841 census. Ages for everyone over 15 years old were supposed to be rounded down to the nearest 5 years. Also, no relationships to the head of household were normally included.

Archibald's occupation of 'writer' would normally indicate a solicitor.

Lots more new children showing in the 1851 entry. Archibald looks to be away from home as Charlotte shows with children and staff at Marshall Place in Perth.

The 1861 census, with a little bit more detail:

Archibald Reid 58, Sherrif Clerk b. Kinnoull Perthshire
Charlotte Reid 54 b. Dunbarney, Perthshire
Catharine Reid 28
Marjory Reid 21
William Reid 16
Isabella Scrimgeour 26, servant
Jean Murray 22, servant

Address: 14 Marshall Pl, Perth

There are a number of refences to Archibald Reid in his capacity as Sheriff Clerk for the County of Perthshire in http://books.google.com/ I searched for "archibald reid" +sheriff +perth.  Also, if you search for "archibald reid" +writer +perth bring up further references to him and his business affairs.

You are likely to find other entries if you change the search parameters  :)

His marriage details from an entry on the Old Parish Registers:

"Perth the Thirteenth day of January One Thousand Eight hundred and Twenty
seven years (13 Jan 1827) --- Contracted.
Archibald REID Writer in the East Church Parish of Perth and Miss Charlotte
CHALMERS in the Parish of Rhynd Daughter to the Deceased Mr John CHALMERS
late Farmer in the said Parish. The Persons before named were regularly
Proclaimed and Married on the fifteenth of January said year (15 Jan 1827)
by the Reverend Mr ANDERSON Minister of the Gospel in the Parish of
Dunbarney."

http://listsearches.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/PERTHSHIRE/2007-10/1193012123

There is also a likely entry for him on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk in the Wills & Testament section which reads:

Archibald Reid Esq. Sometime Sheriff and Commisary Clerk of Co. Perth, residing at 14 Marshall Place, Perth.

This has a date of 11 August 1875. You should be able to find his death certficate if you are interested in this on Scotlands People, I think it shows in 1874 in Perth on the site.

Philip, I'm not sure if you are local to Perthshire and can do research on foot as it were! You might want to consider contacting the local archives and local history groups to see what else you can find out about Archibald and his family and his life there.

www.rootschat.com/links/0boa/ This link will take you to the Perth & Kinross Council website and their page on Family History at the Local Studies library. Lots of links on the r/h side to family history groups that you could also follow up on.

Have fun with this Philip....and to think this all comes from a portrait in your possession!
