Australian Marriage Certificates
« on: Wednesday 02 April 14 13:06 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I don't know if anyone can help me, but I have a bit of a conundrum! I have found two marriage entries in Sydney. Looking at the codes, one is for a Catholic church and one a Church of England. I suspect that it was the bride who was Catholic and not the groom.

I can't afford to buy them both at this time, so was hoping somebody might be able to tell me if the certificates are likely to contain vastly different amounts of information? I am particularly looking for ages/dates of birth/parental details.

(Meant to say that this is for a marriage in 1844!)

Many thanks!

Dominic

Hi Dominic,

Civil registration in NSW did not commence until 1856, so prior to that there are no marriage certificates, just church records.

Here are a couple of random examples of pre-printed marriage registers in Newcastle, NSW, before and after 1856:

The extra details were not included until 1856, but you may find that witness names provide clues, as well as notations of permission to marry if the bride or groom was under 21.

Have you considered ordering an OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTION (of each one) .....  NSW BDM has appointed several.  These are cheaper and quicker than the formal certificate, and just as informative.

Also, if you were to offer the names of the 1844 bride and groom, it may well be that there were TWO couples, rather than one couple marrying twice ....

Here's several links that will help.

http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/bdm_fh/bdm_trc.html  (scroll down to get the Official Transcription Contacts .... all three are excellent)

I should mention that the online index dates from the 1930s volunteer efforts, examining the original parish records that NSW BDM holds.  NSW BDM does NOT hold all the early Church registers.  Some current work on some of the early registers is coming online via  https://familysearch.org/

There are many instances of duplicate/triplicate entries in the pre civil registration era, as the local parishes were meant to transmit summaries of their registers each quarter, to their respective denomination's Heads.   Sadly, not all transmitted their records, and not all transmitted records are extant.

Cheers,  JM

Dominic I see you are in UK so looking up these films might be a tad difficult!

If you can give us the details you have found - presumably from the NSW BDM online - one of us may be able to have a look for you.
I may be able to do this on 12 April when I'll be visiting my local FHS library which has them.
But it is most unlikely that you will find any parental information, unless as Dundee suggested, a parent had to give permission to marry.  Sometimes, the witnesses may be parents, but this is not stated on the form and only evident if you already know the names of parents or siblings etc.
