Would appreciate having information about Thomas Goodman (b. 1825, Bletchley), especially parents' names. Maybe in 1841 census if available to anyone. Thanks, Jim

Hi,

this is 1861:

RG9/871
Folio 103 p. 27
Bletchley, Buckinghamshire

Thomas Goodman, head, 38, Farmers Labourer
Ann, wife, 38
George, son, 13
Elizabeth, dau, 10, Lace Maker
Mary A, dau, 9, scholar
Ellen, son (sic), 7, scholar
Thomas, son, 5, scholar
William, son, 2, scholar
Amos, son, 5mths
John, father, wid, 69, Highway Labourer

Everybody born Bletchley.

Perhaps this will make it easier finding him in earlier censuses.

Dear Tanja,
Thank you for the information. I'm not certain this is the correct Thomas Goodman, as I have a Thomas Goodman in 1861 in Somerset Co. (born Bletchley). I'm reasonably certain that my TG married Caroline Timbury of Kilmersdon, Somerset, and had children by 1855. However, TG is enumerated as a boarder (married) in Widcombe, Somerset, in 1861 without the rest of his family. The 1841 or 1851 census may clear this up.

Oh, then he's the one down as age 32?

Sorry I can't help with 1851 or 1841.

I have found Caroline in 1861. You may already have this. Please let me know if you don't.

I believe that's correct but I'm not absolutely certain. I do know his wife was from Somerset, so he may have relocated there from Buckinghamshire. I do have the details from the 1861 census. Thank you for your help.

Thomas has gone from the whole of Buckinghamshire by the 1851 census. The other Thomas Goodman is in Bletchley. If that Thomas Goodman's father was John, then this perhaps is yours taken from the IGI which has good coverage for Buckinghamshire

THOMAS GOODMAN
Christening:  01 AUG 1824   Bletchley
Father:  WILLIAM GOODMAN
Mother:  ELIZABETH

It would appear the other Thomas had a baptism in 1823.

These are the other baptisms on the IGI in Bletchley with parents William and Elizabeth

WM. GOODMAN
Christening: 10 MAR 1806
SARAH GOODMAN
Christening: 17 APR 1807
DANIEL GOODMAN
Christening: 19 FEB 1809
SARAH GOODMAN
Christening: 31 MAR 1811
ANN GOODMAN
Christening: 18 APR 1813
JOHN GOODMAN
Christening: 04 JUN 1815
HENRY GOODMAN
Christening: 28 NOV 1819

Dear Valda,
Thank you for going to the trouble of providing me with that information. I am still trying to sort out Thomas Goodman. He appears in 1861 in Somerset Co., age 32, married; however, his wife is not enumerated with him. In 1871, the presumably same Thomas Goodman appears with his wife, Caroline, still in Somerset, but age 46 (i.e., not age 42). Interestingly, their children are living with Caroline's father and mother., Samuel and Susanna Timbury. Meanwhile, the "other" Thomas Goodman is living in Bletchley and married to Ann. I suspect that the latter Thomas Goodman in the IGI with a christening date of August 1, 1824 is not my Thomas Goodman since his children named William and Elizabeth most likely were named for his father and mother. "My" Thomas did not have children with these forenames. Does that make sense or am I missing something?
Regards,
Jim

There appears to be only two Thomas Goodmans of Bletchingley. As yet there is no evidence that there was a third Thomas born in Bletchingley at the same time.
One Thomas was baptised in Bletchingley in 1823 and his parents were John and Jane. On the 1861 census this Thomas was still in Bletchingley with his father, John - Tanja has given you the census information for this Thomas.
The other Thomas baptised 1824 had parents William and Elizabeth. He was not in Buckinghamshire in 1851 which might indicate that he and/or his parents had moved to another county. Or by 1851 both parents had died and may be this Thomas (plus all siblings!) - so moving seems more likely.
By the C19th traditional naming patterns had broken down and many people did not choose to name their children after their parents and grandparents.
I would suggest you request an 1841 census look up in the hope that both Thomases (or evidence of a third Thomas emerges) in Bletchingley. Otherwise you need to look through the baptisms and burials for Bletchingley to reconstruct both Goodman families (or a third from the evidence of the burials) and see when your family left Bletchingley.
I presume you haven't been able to find a marriage for Thomas to Caroline?
Regards
Valda
