Whitechapel Infirmary 1882
« on: Thursday 30 October 14 18:19 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I haven't used this website for some time and it has changed considerably so apologies if I've put this in the wrong place.

I was just wondering if someone died in the Whitechapel Infirmary 1882 (Ellen Herbert) where would she have been buried?

Thanks
Linda :)

Hi Linda

The most likely place would be Tower Hamlets cemetery, that has now closed and become a nature reserve and the records have been deposited at the London Metropolitan Archives.

They've produced a leaflet here

There's also a comprehensive topic about London burials here

I have found a record for Ellen Herbert in Whitechapel Infirmary died 05/12/1882 of what looks like bronchitis and old age but they say she was 79.  As for her burial it all depends if she had family that could bury her, if so like dawnsh says it is most likely Tower Hamlets, if not it could be anywhere. Next time I go to LMA I will have a look. Do you know her religion as Tower Hamlets has many different sections to their records, I have spent hours looking for my lot amongst them

Just a reminder that LMA is now closed until 17 November.

Hello and thanks to everyone who has replied.  However, I'm not too sure that the Ellen Herbert who died at the Whitechapel Infirmary in 1882 is the correct one.  She was originally married to my Gt Gt Grandfather (Benjamin Glover) in 1842 at All Saints, Poplar but re-married Thomas Herbert at St Mary's, Whitechapel in 1866 (they were then living in Brick Lane) but it states that she is 42 on the marriage cert to Thomas Herbert - so her age doesn't seem to tie up.
My husband and I are going to London next week (to see the Poppies) and I just thought there might be a chance of getting some more info but I take note that the LMA will be closed - bad timing!
Thanks again

Regards
Linda :)
