Two images for dating of the Kendall family!
« on: Monday 14 April 14 04:01 BST (UK) »
I am attaching two images, one of a female and one of a male (hope they attach ok), in the hope that someone can suggest approx. dates based on clothing, hairstyles or anything at all!!

I believe the 'photos' in my keeping, have been enlarged and therefore have probably been over-sketched.

Much appreciated in advance!

You're right in thinking these are over sketched enlargements which doesn't help with dating.
However I would suggest the lady's is 1880's.
The man 1920's perhaps.

Many thanks Jim for your response. Now for me to to see if they fit with who I think they may, based on your suggested dates.

Also Joyful for your act of kindness!   :)

Jim's right...I had had a look at these earlier and there just aren't any dating clues. The clothing is nondescript and not much of it is showing. Really what we'd need to see would be the originals including frames and backs, which aren't available.

The only thing I might add is that I think the lady is later than Jim's estimate....mainly because she seems to be smiling and that would have been unheard of in the 1880s. Unseemly and Not the Done Thing and all that :) Her bodice seems to include bretelle-like shoulder flap thingies and so she and the gent could be more or less contemporary.

Just my opinion :)

The young man's marriage (if it is who I think it is) was in 1919 and Jim estimated 1920'ish which falls spot on! Is it conceivable it could be from a wedding day image? He looks happy enough!  ;D

A later date for the lady could 'fit' the generations better.......not too young, not too old or dead....but as others have alluded to in various posts, the age can be deceiving in these over sketched images. Sighhhh!

Thanks chinakay!

Hi Earlsdau

Are they Cornish Kendall's by any chance?

Polly 50....Originally yes they were from Cornwall - Gwennap/St. Day area. My ggrandfather x 2, James Goldsworthy Kendall emigrated to Victoria, Australia in 1847 and hence started an Australian branch of Kendalls.

Hi Earlsdau

My Kendall's are from North Cornwall. I've noticed there seems to be around three clusters of Kendall's in Cornwall, North, Falmouth area and Gwennap/St Day/Redruth. However, a very "quick" search on Cornwall OPC site (eg. 1600-1750) seems to indicate that the highest concentration appears in North Cornwall; perhaps they spread out from there?

I am only back to the early 1800's with my lot and many of them have moved around a fair bit.
There are several James Kendall's in my family tree, but James is a common name! Good luck in your research and if you do find a North Cornwall ancestor or two we may be connected.
