Entry in a baptism register 1626
« on: Friday 10 October 14 19:28 BST (UK) »
Can anyone read this please? The name of the child is Willm Bilcliffe but I'm lost with the rest! I think the family were catholic recusants, may or may not be relevant.

Thanks!

Thanks for this GR2. Houghton is particularly helpful, as it confirms this is the recusant family.

So -
Willm Bilcliffe of Houghton [......] [.......] had a child [un?]baptised and never/neither came to ye church to be baptised.

I think the general import is that the child was not baptised in the parish church, but its existence was recorded.

Any ideas about the missing two words?

Since the facility is still active, I have modified my previous post. The first two mystery words both begin with h. "neither" rather than "never" is the correct reading. Still can't make out the short word, but it isn't "un" as you suggest.

Is it perhaps an abbreviated form of "which" ?

I also think the word after “Haughton” could be “Hawe” (part of the place name?), as here ...

Thanks Bookbox, definite possibilities. I can't find any other references to Hawe Hills or Haughills, the online catalogue for the Crewe Muniments doesn't go into such detail unfortunately.

This William petitioned for relief for himself and his wife, both over 80, at Pontefract Quarter Sessions in 1676 stating that he had served as a soldier at Pontefract Castle and lost two sons in the King's service.

Pity the child wasn't named in the register!
