Family surnames being researched ...
Crawford, Neilson, Lindsay, Reekie, Davidson
Drummond, Laing, Pearson, Tulloch ... will do for starters but there's a whole lot more!

From the last quarter of the 17th century onwards the old townships were gradually divided into farms of more moderate size. These retained the old name, but had a more specific designation added. The "-ton" at the end (occasionally "-town") means a farm-town, not a town in the urban sense. You might get Easterton of Cobairdy, Westerton of Cobairdy, Netherton of Cobairdy, Mid Cobairdy, Yonderton of Cobairdy, Newton of Cobairdy, Newseat of Cobairdie, Little Cobairdy, Upperton (or Overton) of Cobairdy, Mains of Cobairdy. Locally, people would just say "Yonderton" or "The Mains".

Thanks GR2

I wasn't disputing your reply, it just seemed a bit strange. I did look on "Streetmap" and found a place called "Yonder Bognie".

Many thanks for the explanation.

If you are not familiar with it, the best source for old maps of Scotland is the National Library of Scotland maps website. It gives you free access to all the old maps of Scotland, including large-scale Ordnance Survey ones from the 19th century (they come under "Series Maps"). There is also a facility which allows you to move a slider and gradually merge into a modern OS or satellite map for comparison.
