John Lavers born 1812
« on: Thursday 13 March 14 11:35 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I've found another brick wall and need Rootschatters help to try and break it!

John Lavers born about 1812 in Nottingham.

Married Mary Ann Smith in Harbertonford in 1833. Census records -

1841 - Harberton - Occupation, woolcoomber.
1851 - Plympton St Mary - Occupation, police constable
1861 - Plympton St Mary - Occupation, Gardener
1871 - Plympton St Maurice - Occupation, Dairyman
1881 - Plympton Maurice - Occupation, Gardener

I cannot find him in the 1891 census, so I assume he died sometime between 1881 & 1891. There are a number of John Lavers who died in this space of time.

I have contacted Devon & Cornwall police to see if they have any records relating to him, sadly they couldn't find any.

Apart from the 1841 census, all the others list his place of birth as Nottingham.

I cannot find his baptism record or anything further to confirm he was born in Nottingham.

Any suggestions / help would be greatly appreciated!

Rich

As all the censuses show him living in Plympton you'd expect that he'd died there, but of the 3 shown, none of the ages fit, nor does the one in Plymouth.

Bearing in mind the name given to his eldest son I think this is probably John's baptism on FreeReg:

John Levers bp.25/3/1812 Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, son of Richard and Mary.

1841 Census has a Richard Lavers age 25 and Martha age 33 in Harbertonford;
FreeREG has them Baptisng a Mary Jane Lavers, 20 June 1841 Harberton.
I cant find them after that.

But Familysearch has this;
Burial, 04 Aug 1887, Salem, Massachusetts;
Richard LAVER, 74, born 1813 England, Widowed, Moracco Dresser
Parents Richard LAVER and Mary CRISPIN

F/S has a Marriage for a Richard LAVERS to Mary CRISPIN 1806 Devon

So did Richard/Mary marry 1806 and then have Children elsewhere including JOHN 1812 in Notts. Then went back to Devon and had more Children.
Hard to prove but names/places etc seem to add up.
