Bowden Foster
« on: Wednesday 23 April 14 19:27 BST (UK) »
My grandmother was Sarah Ann Bowden 1901-1995. Her parents were Peter Bowden and Margaret Foster. I am trying to find Margaret's father and grandfather, both ? William Foster, wine merchants from Cornwall. William Sr's wife is said to have been Spanish. I cannot find her anywhere. Help please!

This would appear to be the marriage for the above Bowdens -

Margaret Ann Foster
Age - 20
Marriage - 1 Jun 1892, St Bartholomew, Westhoughton
Father's Name - John Foster, collier
Spouse's Name - Peter Bowden, bachelor, farmer
Age - 26
Spouse's Father's Name - Allen Bowden, contractor

Wits - Enoch Foster & Ellen Seddon

You have the name of Margaret's father as William so perhaps the above information is not for the family you are researching.

Could you let us know what documentation you have that states Margaret's father as William and his occupation as a wine merchant please?

There are many people willing to help on RootsChat but it's advisable to post all the information you have to enable us to help you  :)

It appears Margaret Ann is recorded as Ann FOSTER in the census returns

Following on from #2 &#3 who I also believe are your family and following the wedding witness of Enoch FOSTER who appears to be Margaret Ann's brother, in 1871 RG 10 2944 81 20 you can find Enoch agaed 2 living with his parents John & Sarah A FOSTER, also in the house are

HINCKS Richard father in law b 1823 & HINCKS Ann b 1827 both Bilston Staffs Margaret's grandparents!

Marriage St Peters Wolverhampton 11 November 1844 Richard HINCKS (s/o Thomas) to Ann JONES ( d/o S JONES)

1841 HINKS can be found at HO107 1001 8

1841 JONES and maybe siblings at HO107 1001 book 8

Looks good to me as in 1891 Enoch is with Mother Sarah A Foster ( born c 1851 Bilston, Staffs) in Westhoughton, Lancashire.
Ann is there also.

Thank you all for your help, I am impressed.  The documentation stating that Margaret Ann's father was William is purely anecdotal. I also found the same information that you have all found, ie father John Foster & mother Sarah A Hinks. It seemed such a long way from the family story that I wondered whether or not I was on the right track. Perhaps John Foster's father was William? There is most definitely a Cornish and Spanish heritage in my maternal ancestory. The story goes that William Foster, a wine merchant in Cornwall, ? Penzance, came back to England with a Spanish wife. This was frowned upon and her name has been lost in the story. It is also reported anecdotally that William was a wine/sherry smuggler. A great story but proving very difficult to authenticate. I will continue searching.
