Omagh Asylum
« on: Sunday 06 July 14 17:48 BST (UK) »
Hi anybody know where I might find information on inpatients at the Omagh Asylum.  My grandmother Susan Mullan died there in 1923 with Melancholia. I would love to find out more information about her time there I'm presuming she had post natal depression because she had my mum in 1922. Thanks Anne

Most medical records are deposited with PRONI, Belfast. There’s usually a 100 year closure rule. However close family can make an application under the Freedom of Information legislation for access.

I suggest you e-mail PRONI with Susan’s details, to see if they have the records and if so, whether they will grant you access. My understanding is that access is often granted but in a redacted way that obscures the details of other adjacent patients records.

Have a look at this, though very highly priced.
Perhaps you could contact the seller to ask if there are names that interest you, in the book.

Anne

I live in Omagh and know Omagh Asylum. I think there are several burial sites around town where residents were buried and if you wish I can make a few local enquiries.

Hi Tony that would be great thank you, :)   this is the  only information I have is that Susan McMahon nee Mullin/Mullan  late of Annacramp Caledon died 9/6/1923 in Omagh Asylum of Melancholic Exhaustion 7months. I don't know if she was buried in Omagh or Caledon. Our family graveis in St Joseph's Caledon only has a very old headstone naming Mullin ancesters and I know my granddad mcMahon and Uncles and G.Aunt are buried there but are not mentioned on the  grave cemetery list. The McMahon's were a poor family so I presume couldn't afford a new headstone at the time.  Thanks Anne x
