Occupation..Car Proprietor..1871 census?
« on: Sunday 09 November 14 22:41 GMT (UK) »
Hello:

Came across the above occupation for a relative in Liverpool, in 1871. Surely this doesn't mean automobiles but rather railway operator/owner. Perhaps it refers to carriage building. Any help is very much appreciated.

Thanks

Hi have you the census ref or provide his details for 1871, what was he in 1861/81?
Are you certain he is Car and not CAB proprietor?

Hello,

On the 1881 census he is listed as a Car Owner, and there is a listing for a son as a Car driver. On the 1861 census it reads Car Owner and Lodging House Proprietor. On the 1851 census he is listed as a boiler maker and a Lodging House Keeper. So what does 'Car' refer to here..surely a horse carriage.
Thanks

From the OED Car a. A wheeled, usually horse-drawn conveyance; a carriage, cart, or wagon.
1888  The New English Dictionary (1884–1928) at Car,   Mod. In some provincial towns (e.g. Birmingham) ‘car’ means a four-wheeled hackney carriage, ‘cab’ meaning a hansom
1895   Daily Chron. 29 Oct. 5/1   A name has not yet been found for horseless carriages... The latest suggestion we have had is ‘motor car’. Mr. F. R. Sim[m]s, who is responsible for it, urges [etc.].
