Goulding(Golding?)/Carter family of Newport
« on: Tuesday 25 October 11 11:34 BST (UK) »
On her marriage certificate, my grandmother Jessie Golding gives her father's name as George Golding, a coal miner (marriage in June 1907, Pontypridd, to John Francis).

I've found her on the 1911 census in Taff's Well, Cardiff, age 26, born Aberdare, Glamorgan; and in 1901 she is a 16 year old servant in Pontypridd.

The family are living in Castleford, West Yorkshire in 1891:
George Goulding, age 37, coal miner, born Newport, Mon
Elizabeth Goulding, wife, age 27, born Newport, Mon
Agnes Goulding, dau, age 12, born Cwmbran, Mon
Edgar G Goulding, son, age 8, born Neath, Glam
Jessie E Goulding, dau, age 6, born Aberdare, Glam

...and in 1881 they are in Trevethin with Pontypool:
Emma Morgan, head, widow, age 41, licensed victualler, born Wellington, Shropshire
Elizabeth Carter, dau, age 16, born Newport, Mon
George Goulding, boarder, single, age 28, coal miner, born Malpas, Mon
Agnes Goulding, dau to boarder, age 3, born Cwmbran

I have found Jessie registered with the surname Carter (no father shown, mother is Eliza Carter), and am unable to find any marriage for George Goulding and Elizabeth Carter, although they registered their subsequent children with the surname Goulding.

I'd really appreciate some suggestions as to how I work backwards and correctly identify the parentage of George and Elizabeth without relying on father's names from a marriage certificate.

Many thanks.  Patricia

Another line to try would be to send for Agness birth cert (qtr june 1878 pontypool)as she was registered Goulding so possibly George was married to her Mother you could then send for their marriage cert when you have Agness mothers name off birth cert and that would then give you Georges Father and you can see if this matches with the census above? I see that Jessie and Edgar were registered Carter.
I cannot find Georges birth, amended -but his brothers is on free bmd Abraham  Golding Qtr dec 1854 Newport,Mon

Trying to find Parents of a Glaticia or Gladice Jones who married John Goulding on 15 Jan 1848 in Bedwelty and came to America about 1858, settling in Ohio, then California and later in Utah.  John and Glaticia were parents of Brigham Goulding, my gr-grandfather. John died 1895 in Garfield Co, UT and Glaticia died some time after 1880.

Thanks for your response to my inquiry but I cannot see any family connection here at the moment.  If one does come to light in the future will be in touch.  Best wishes.

Welcome to Rootschat, bookcollector!  ;D

It would be a good idea to ask a moderator to split off your query into a separate post. In the meantime, do you have a copy of the 1848 marriage cert as that should give the name & occupation of Gladice's father?

John Goulding march qtr 1848 Abergavenny vol 26 pg 36 with Gladice Jones on the same page

You can get a copy from the GRO

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

1851 census gives a Breconshire birth place for Gladice
Machen, Monmouthshire HO107/2453 folio 524 pg 17
John Goulding head mar 27 coal miner b. Monmouthshire, Sirhowy
Gladice wife 27 b. Breconshire
Mary dau 5 months b. Machen
George Evance(?) lodger 23 coal miner b. Somerset, Burton

Gladice's place of birth is difficult to make out, but it begins with D & ends in og, so probably Defynnog.
