Glasgow Travelling folk of the 1900's
« on: Thursday 02 October 14 13:10 BST (UK) »
Hi There I am currently writing a novel which included a story about some travelling folk in Glasgow in the 1900's
the gist of the opening of this part of the novel involves a travelling lady dying in childbirth and the beautiful daughter is brought up by her granny - my question concerns where would a Glasgow traveller be buried in such a case in the early 1900's - where would they be travelling to and from - of course I can make all this up but it would be so much better with true facts and anecdotes
I will if desired name the source of my info in the book when it is published - I am a published author and this particular novel has been approve by my editor
Thank you in advance
Soraya

Hi Soraya,

I think some travelling folk are buried at what is or was known as Jeanfield Cemetery up near Parkhead in Glasgow. There are also some buried in Glasgow Necropolis.

That's amazing.....a little bit before the period I am writing about but definatly stuff there that I can use. Did uever hear a story of a traveling girl who went missing one day while selling white heather door to door somewhere in the Midlands around 1900,s 1920,s. She was never found and no one was brought to justice.

No not heard that story but I,m sure someone or maybe a few people who frequent this board may have heard it. Its possible though that if it was in the Birmingham area that she went missing then she may have have fallen foul of a Victorian gang called the Peaky Blinders (BBC 2 are going to show a drama based on them on tv).

Hi.  Sorarya. Having traveled all over Scotland. For many years. And being of the romany people. I can tell you that there are many travelling people around Glasgow. Living.  and  buried there.  But you find them buried all over Scotland. As we did/don't have a fixed church. And tend to wed
. baptise. Inter. Where we are camping. And there's a mix of faiths. Most romany folk. Are religious. But few attend church. Maybe it's because we're a group thats suffered persecution. And tend to keep to ourselves.  Yours  rob. G

Hi There Rob, The book I am writing is fiction I wanted to be reasonably accurate about certain aspects that I have no knowledge of - Friends within your community have been a great help and I have been privileged to hear great stories and see lovely photographs of times gone by. Persecution seems to be prevalent in society if not on one kind on another and I want to include something of the injustice of that. Many years ago when I found myself in an emergency situation it was travellers who stopped to help me while others just drove on ignoring me or looking on curiously as they passed - I have always remembered that - I am a white witch and my husband and I had a registry office wedding (for the legalities) but then we had a beautiful handfasting ceremony in our garden and I wondered if there was something similar for the travelling community too.
Thank you for responding
Blessings Soraya
