Help re. ADAM HENDERSON
« on: Friday 08 November 13 15:26 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I've just joined and I'm trying to trace back my Henderson roots. I've got as far back as Adam Henderson, who I believe was born in 1796 and died in 1845, he was a farm/estate worker at (the then called) Larkhall Farm, which served Glenburn Hall. He was married to Elizabeth Lees (1806-1888), and they had a son, George (born around 1831/2).

Any info would be appreciated on Adam and his father/grandfather, etc. I've been looking for a while now, and seemed to have completely hit a brick wall!

Many thanks

Hi and welcome

I suspect you already have this 1841 entry but will post for background info.  All b Roxburgh

In 1841 - ages from 16yrs upwards were rounded down to the nearest 5yrs so you have to allow for that when searching for a birth etc

Adam Henderson  40
Elizabeth 35
Jane  14
Margaret  12
Adam 10
George 8
Daniel  6
Elizabeth 4
Helen    3
John 2
Agnes 1 Month

Hi Carole, and thanks for your reply.

Yes, I have a copy of that 1841 census, it's trying to go back further that's proving difficult. I'll try broadening the birth date more as you mentioned and see how I get on...

Hi

Does his death cert give his age as that may be more reliable

Yes the death certificate gives his age as 49 on Sept 7th 1845. Although having re-read the birth certificate closely again, it mentions the baptism was in (I think) Kingside, Whittengham, on 2nd March 1795.

Doing some further investigsting now...

The area is now known as Gordon, Berwick. His father was also Adam Henderson, a shepherd.

So you have his fathers name - is this from the birth cert you mention (or baptismal cert)?

Is any mothers name shown as there is this marriage which is just before Adam's birth

Yes, that's from the baptismal certificate. There's no mother's name shown though unfortunately.

I noticed on the 2 links you posted, that the names are the same, but the places and dates are different?

I suspect one is banns and may indicate that either Adam or Agnes were from the parish in which the banns were read but married in Gordon
