James Ross's Stables - Drummond Street, Edinburgh - early 1800s
« on: Friday 01 August 14 14:50 BST (UK) »
I have a probate from 1821 that has a Robert Lisle as an "Hostler" (ostler) at the stables of a James Ross in Drummond Street.  Robert's estate is £795, quite a bit for a man of of just 29, so I'm guessing these were the horses of Edinburgh's elite he was looking after.

I've found a map of 1821 that shows a "riding school" below western end of the street

http://www.edinphoto.org.uk/1_MAP/1_map_dumbiedykes_1821.htm

I'm wondering if these were actually the "stables" referred to in the probate ??

I've found also that in the 1850s the "New Edinburgh Veterinary College" was established at stables at 6 Drummond Place... perhaps it was these instead ??

If anyone has any leads on James Ross so I can nail down the stables that would be great.

Found them  :)

Full version of the 1821 Edinburgh map is downloadable here

http://www.sharegeo.ac.uk/handle/10672/274?show=full

zoomed in on the TIF copy and it clearly labels "Ross's Stables" just above the Riding School

If anyone does though have info on Ross's stables please do let me know.

The stable courtyard that became the Veterinary College was apparently formerly Ross's stables

at the bottom is an option to download pdf of the record

Thank you Janan.  That item confirms my suspicions as I can't see any other stables marked on the 1821 map.

Does make it look pretty likely that Ross's stables served the adjacent riding school.

You may well be right as although the Riding School was designed to have stables on either side of the hall it is possible they were never built

Lots of detail there Janan.  It doesn't look a very distinctive shape, except the curved end but that doesn't show up in the 1821 map detail  :-\   Possibly that bit didn't happen.  If there were stables inside the school then Ross's stables would just have been serving the well to do locals.
