Title: Locating graves/plots in Alnwick Cemetery
Post by: LWLen on Saturday 15 May 10 00:18 BST (UK)
Hi folks,

I am looking to locate a gravestone or two in Alnwick Cemetery. I have no idea what monumental inscriptions, if any, have been published for this site but as the deaths I'm looking at were all relatively recent (1938, 1963/4 and 1978) I'm assuming they probably wouldn't be covered anyway. I was just wondering if anyone could tell me where my starting point for finding any relevant information would be?

I'm nowhere near Northumberland or I'd just have gone in and wandered around myself, but if someone could confirm the best place to contact I'd be grateful. Should it be the cemetery itself, or would the records for this period be with some other institution?

Thanks,
Alan

Hi Alan

I assume you are talking about the civil cemetery.

The burial registers and some headstone inscriptions up to 1945 are at Northumberland County records office.

Presumably the later ones will still be with the cemetery - phone numbers etc. should be available on Northumberland County Council web site

Hi Christine,

Yes, I think that's the one I'm talking about - thank you for your help.

When I went looking at Alnwick cemetery they had all the records on computer - and they easily found the names I was looking for,  and the locations.  It was more difficult catching the man actually in the office. It may be worth a letter and a SAE.
We will be in the area in a couple of weeks time and again in November so if you can get the information you are looking for I could go walkabout with a camera.
