Baptism lookup please for Mary Jane Thompson b.1875 New Swindon.

Hi just wondering if there are any baptism records for Mary Jane Thompson b. 1875 or her sisters, Ann Elizabeth b.1874 or Julia Nellie Thompson b. 1879. They were all born in New Swindon, Wiltshire. Their parents were Matthew Thompson b.1848 and Mary Jane Adye b.1847. Thanks Ann.

Her birth record was registered in Malmesbury.
I have lived in New Zealand most of my life, so not very familiar with these areas.

Malmesbury is about 15 miles in a straight line from Swindon, the road is fairly straight between the two, so not much farther if travelling on it. They are two entirely different registration districts.

The family were living in Malmesbury during the 1851 census. It states her father and mother were born in Malmesbury, but Ann, Mary and Julia were born in New Swindon, which would be the part of Swindon where the Great Western Railway workers were living. Her father is a Chargeman with the GWR according to the 1851 census.

In 1841 they were living at 13 Regent Street and Matthew was a butcher (!) - quite a change of occupation.

Up till 1899 Swindon was in the Highworth registration district.

If she was baptised, I think it would have been at St Marks, which was built for the growing number of GWR workers and their families. The records are held at The Wilts & Swindon History Centre at Chippenham.

I'm a bit lost, If Mary Jane was born in 1875 and her parents in 1847 and 1848 how could Mathew be a butcher and be living at 13 Regent Street in 1841? Also how coould the family be living in Malmesbury in 1851?

  I had a quick skim through the St, Marks parish records and could not see any of the names mentioned in the relevant timeframe. Of course, I could have missed them.

I had another look today and could not see them at St, Marks, I also looked at Christchurch [in the old town] to no avail. Maybe, given that the parents are from Malmesbury they had their children baptized in their home parish.

According to the 1881 census, Mathew Thompson is a butcher.
