Tom Dixon born 1852 Torpenhow Cumberland/1871 census lookup
« on: Friday 14 February 14 08:29 GMT (UK) »
Can't find Tom Dixon in 1871 Census. Found him in 1861 living with mother Sarah and step father Richard McCartney, 1881 census in Workington with his wife Jane, son William. Got him in every census until his death in 1916. He was married in November 1878 in Barrow in Furness to Jane Templeton, states his father was Thomas Richardson, colliery steward but on his birth certificate no father is registered just his mother Sarah Dixon. Tom's employment was a labourer on marriage certificate whereas by later census he was a boilermaker. Tom's birth certificate gives date of birth of 13th October 1852 born Bothel/Torpenhow, death certificate in 1916 gives age at death as 62, this would give him dob 1854. Any help gratefully accepted.

cant find him in 1871 either

Yes just 1871 census thought it might help place what happened to the rest of his family. His stepfather Richard McCartney died in 1869, haven't got the death of his mother yet, she may possibly have died before 1871 and then there were the three half brothers named on 1861 census, haven't managed to track them in 1871 either..William Fisher McCartney born 1857, John born 1859 and Robert McCartney born 1861.
Thank you for looking though for Tom Dixon, I'm sure it will be all worked out eventually.

Hi
There is a marriage in Wigton(which includes Torpenhow) AMJ 1864
Same page 10b 881
Sarah Dixon
Thomas Richardson

It may be coincidence but possibly Tom could be Thomas Richardson in 1871, there are a couple of possibles in wigton in 1871.

Had a look at marriage for Thomas Richardson/Sarah Dixon in 1864 on Familysearch, her dob is given as 1840, Tom Dixon was born in 1852 so she would have been twelve years old if this Sarah is his mother. Will have a look through 1871 census at other Richardson/Dixon marriages, I hadn't thought of going down this track. 1861 census with Richard and Sarah McCartney living with Tom Dixon seemed to fit the bill better but Dixon is such a common name in Cumberland!

I think I have found Tom in 1871 Census at last :). Living with his mother Sarah, and two brothers William and John in Workington.

Sarah's surname is written down as Cartey rather than McCartney and Tom is down as Cartey instead of Dixon, born 1854 Kirkland.

Got Sarah Macartney/Cartey death certificate, it confirms she is the mother of Tom Dixon.

Tom was present at the death and registered it under the name of Tom Macartney but the details on the certificate back up the info from the 1861 Census where he is registered as Tom Dixon.

Death cert details:
Sarah Macartney age 49
7th July 1875, at 11 Row, Workington
Widow of Richard Macartney, labourer
Informant: Tom Macartney, son
Cause of death: Chronic Rheumatism for many years/Pneumonia for 10 days

Now all I have to do is work out which Sarah Dixon born 1825 to John Dixon, labourer she was ::)
