Hi Julian.
had a look at your chart.
got a Query
i have John Down married to Mary Stansford abt 1795 son Robert born 1798. now is this John son of John and Ann. or did John marry twice ?

I found parents of Martha Shergold b 1808 -- Thomas Shergold 1776 and Ann. think his parents are Richard Shergold and Martha Head m 1765 grt Wishford. his parents Zaccariah Shergold and Mary Wheeler. his parents Robert Shergold and Frances..

Our Wiltshire Families are so intertwinned it gets rather confusing !!

Hi Jean,

Oh 'ek!  I have read your post first thing this morning and I don't think that was a good idea if I am to get anything more done today.  The names and dates you have given me have left me a bit puzzled trying to reconcile them.  Too many names the same but different dates.  I was planning to go to check my father's house (rented out) n3ear Fawley on 16th Aug so if I have not got my head round it by then, it looks like I will be stopping in Great Wishford on the way back.  The research I have was done my my mother (who died some 7 years ago) but knowing her she would have taken care to get it right so ..... A glass of home brew and the computer tonight?

Hi Jean,

They used to say "A Dubble Diamond works wonders" but not, it seams, as much as Rhubarb and Apple.

If I may explain the background:  Doreen (Mum) died 2004.  Dad is still alive but two years last January he burst a lung (he has COPD) and survived 3 weeks treatment in hospital.  He could not continue living on his own in Hampshire so I brought him to live here at Bristol and his house was rented out.  Obviously there was a big clearance.  There has now bewen another as we have had to move Dad to a dementia care home.  Now, some years back Mum bought an expensive Family Tree book which she duly filled out and gave to my brother having let me - the computer nerd - copy it.  I gave her a copy on disk that Dad seems to have printed and Mum has gone on to add notes to.  I found Mum's ammended version today.  I attach one of the added pages that claims the Down family bible as it's source.

The explanation is to demonstrate I'm only just finding this out myself so please excuse me if it seems I'm not forthcoming with info.

Short answer, look at the attachment, John had a second marage.

Watch this space .....

Regards,

Julian

Hi JeanLillian
It would appear we have the same ancestors, My great grandfather Richard Down left Great Wishford in 1890 and married in Rochdale Lancs. He was born in 1846ish. His father was Thomas Down of Great Wishford and South Newton (next village). After that it would appear its an Richards! I do remember many years ago findiing a link to Elias Down. The name Shergold and Blake appears too. I once went down to Great Wishford and there are still Down's living there.

I have only just stumbled on this chat and see some familiar names.

Can anyone expand on what I have, please:

1/ William Shergold (b.c.1791) of Downton, Wilshire
      m. 1stly 16/9/1813 at Downton Martha Newman

2/ James Shergold (b.9/5/1824-living 1871)
     m. Louisa (b.c.1821 at Redlynch - living 1871)

3/ Harry Shergold (b.c.1863/4-d.1906 in Salisbury, Wiltshire)
     m. Fanny Virtue Batten (b.1862)

What I really want to find is older ancestors, as well as parentage for Martha Newman and Louisa (I already have some for Fanny Virtue Batten).

Many thanks,
Caspar
