Hiya all
interesting chat and thread.

We have lived in Laurieston for twenty years and walk and run the Kirk Road to the Balmaghie Kirk regularly.
We spotted the monument while running yesterday for the first time!
Will visit on our next walk. Tell me though which farm is 'Morrisons', please?

Regards phil

Hi Phil  welcome.
Going down the Kirk road away from the Kirk, you have the monument up the small hill on your left.
A short distace along is the farmhouse. It is now known as "Auchenhay". This name is (was) displayed on the steel farm gate at its entrance.

The monument was described as-- An indifferently erected stone pillar 11 feet high. On a stone at
its base  is the following inscription.
" John Charters built this Cairn
and left this place for Canada
N. America April 1836.  Repaired
by his father and this stone Lettered,
and put up Aug't 1843
in remembrance of him, "

I never saw the inscription as it must have been buried over time.
Hope this helps.
Rgds Matt.

Brilliant - thanks Matt!

So Auchenhay, now a holiday home I believe, was once Morrison farm.
What a fantastic aspect and context.
