Hopeman Addresses
« on: Tuesday 19 March 13 23:34 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to find out who lived at 42 Forsyth Street, Hopeman before 1861.
My Great Great Grandmother was Bridget Simpson who was widowed in 1854 after her husband was killed in the Crimean War.  She was living in Canada and must have returned between 1854 and 1861.  She was living ar the above address in 1861 then moved to 26 Abbey Street and died there in 1895.
Can anyone tell me how to go about finding if this address was owned by the Simpson family?
Many thanks

Evelyn

Most people rented their homes. The way to find out who owned the property is to look at the Valuation Roll. This gives the name of the proprietor and any tenant or occupier. The 1855, 1865, 1875, 1885 and 1895 rolls are available digitally in the National Records of Scotland in Edinburgh. Local archives may have some of the rolls for their area for other years.
