Just wondering if anyone out there is researching the Withers families in Somerset as I have found out there were quite a lot of them :)

Hi

Can you be more specific as to exactly which Withers families you are researching?

The 1911 index has 281 entries for that surname in Somerset

Hi

My great grandfather was George Withers born in 1879 in Priston Somerset and lived in Combe Hay and Twerton. His parents were William and Emma Withers.  I have since discovered that the fathers of William and Emma were  called George Withers so I have two sides to this tree and it is proving to be huge. I am assuming that William and Emma were cousins of some sort??

thanks for replying

1881 census has the family so:
Reference RG11, Piece 2448, Folio 70, Page 9
Priston, Somerset

Withers, William  Head  M  38  Ag Lab  b Priston
Withers, Emma  Wife  F  46  b Colford, Gloucestershire
Colborn, Fanny E  Daughter  F  14  Servant  b Priston
Colborn, Ada S  Daughter  F  12  Scholar  b Priston
Withers, Frederick C  Son  M  9  Scholar  b Priston
Withers, Earnest  Son  M  7  Scholar  b Priston
Withers, Kate  Daughter  F  5  b Priston
Withers, George  Son  M  2  b Priston

And a marriage:
June qtr 1871
Keynsham district    Vol 5c, Page 1175

Withers, William
Colbourn, Emma

And in 1861, Emma was with previous husband:
Reference RG09, Piece 1701, Folio 71, Page 8
Priston, Somerset

Colborn, John  Head  M  28  Blacksmith  b Dunkerton, Somerset
Colborn, Emma  Wife  F  24  b Coleford, Gloucestershire
Colborn, Anna Maria  Daughter  F  3 months  b Priston

I can't seem to find Emma's marriage to John, in order to confirm her maiden name?

However, purchasing either the marriage certificate of Emma & William, or a birth certificate of one of her children should confirm her maiden name.
The marriage certificate would also confirm her father's name?
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

All the Colborn and Withers children listed above can be found on BathBMD. Registered in the Newton Keynsham subdistrict, which I assume included Priston. The mother's maiden name was EDWARDS.

John Colborn married Emma Edwards at Holy Trinity, Bath in 1860.

William Withers married Emma Edwards or Colborn at St. Luke's, Priston in 1871.

I have lots of Withers ancestors in Somerset. They were in Combe Hay in the first half of the 18th century but then migrated to the Wells area and later some moved on to just south of Bristol. I don't know of any link to the Withers who were in Combe Hay and Priston in the 19th century, but it's certainly possible.

Thank you all so much for this information ;D, it looks like I have the wrong Great Great Grandmother in my family tree, which explains why I have hit a brick wall in my research   :D

I am sure though that all the Withers in Somerset are related somewhere along the line. My maiden name was Withers but my Gr Grandad George came to work in South Wales and married a Welsh girl, so I am the other side of the bridge but I have visited Priston and intend to visit again.

Thanks again

Sharon
