Hi Poodlz,

The answer to how and when Edward BELL arrived in New Zealand is more likely found here than in the UK, so this is the correct RootsChat Board for your enquiry, at least for the moment. ;)

I agree with Kiwihalfpint about Remittance Men; my understanding is that they were sent a remittance (e.g. were financially supported) by family, for a variety of reasons.

Edward BELL's 1920 death certificate should provide a clue in the column 'How long lived in New Zealand'. This will help narrow your search period.

Have you checked PapersPast for any early mentions of him or for an obituary?

And have you checked New Zealand, Archives New Zealand, Passenger Lists, 1839-1973?

I saw a brief obituary for him on PapersPast. Search 'edward bell'.

Yes that is what I have come to believe.  His father was a 'Tanner' which in those days was probably perceived as a good income and from what I can perceive and the family history I have got thru RootsChat I am of the opinion that as he was the second son he was sent away with an allowance from his father to go abroad, whether he received an allowance whilst he was here I have yet to discover.  He married my Gt, Gt, Grandmother in Waiuku, NZ which is in the North Island south of Auckland so I can only presume he landed in Auckland, but how he met her is a bit of a mystery.  Soon after their marriage they went to the South Island, my investigation into her family suggests she came from a fairly well to do family, her father was a Chemist; later a very regarded JP. I have just recently had contact with her family as they are organizing a family reunion and their family tree shows that they have no information on my G G Grandmother whatsoever, which clarifies that the family obviously wrote her off!!

In reply to your earlier post, yes I have his death certificate:
He was born in Carlisle
He lived in NZ for 45 years
He died September 1920
Which means he came to NZ 1875
His Father was John Bell
Mother Elizabeth Furniss

Some information on death certs is often incorrect as it is only as good as the informant, does it say who the informant was?

There is this chap arriving in 1876

Deputy Registrar, Timaru.  He died in Otipua Road, Timaru, NZ an area where all my ancestors lived.
My understanding is that there was a conflict in the family; hers/his and I am not sure why.  My Aunt who only recently died last year aged 94 always said it was a mystery that was never talked about as to how they married and how they came to live in Ashburton, NZ
